Big Strikes in French on September 23

by nygaston

They expect big strikes in france on September 23: trains, RER, metro, bus...

Re: Big Strikes in French on September 23

I think these strikes (there have been several lately) also affect the airports. What a mess!

Re: Big Strikes in France on September 23

They most certainly do affect airports. These strikes will continue until either Sarkozy is forced out of office and/or he drops his government's plans to increase the retirement age from 60 to 62 and abolish the ridiculous 32 hour working week.

Expect similar action in the UK in the not too distant future.

can anyone tell how you figure out if your train will be running or not???? we are returning from lourdes to paris on the tgv on an 11:15am direct train (ie we don't need to change trains)--there are two earlier trains that morning that we could try to take in the hopes that one of the 3 trains makes it.....could we ask at the train station the day before which trains are operating? thanks.

It's already bad enough here with Tube strikes, BA strikes and who knows what comes next. In bad economic times, the unions should be a bit more understanding and go back to take Economics 101. It may be a very dark year indeed.

Travel Tips for Paris

Ingrid Betancourt on the Hôtel de Ville de Paris

by JLBG

The Hôtel de Ville de Paris, Paris Town hall was built at the end of the 19th at the same place that a much older Town hall building, burnt and destroyed during riots in 1870. It has a strange neo Renaissance style. I cannot say if it is beautiful or ugly as it is so special!

In 2006, it was holding a large poster for Ingrid Betancourt, hostage in Colombia since February 22nd 2002 and made honorary citizen of Paris. Posters for several hostages in the Middle East were also hung on the building. They were removed when they were freed. Only Ingrid Betancourt remained... The site of the new campaign of the International Federation of Betancourt Committees tries to bring together, the maximum number of photos of people from all over the world in order to show international support for the liberation of all hostages held in Colombia.

Did you know...

Did you know that there is not only one Arc the Triomphe in Paris. There are three. Beginning with the Arc du Carroussel in the gardens of the Louvre-museum. This is the smallest of all. The famous Arc de Triomphe on Place de l´Étoile fits exactly over the Arc du Carroussel. And the biggest Grande Arche, of La Défense fits perfectly over the Arc de Triomphe. Find out your self!

Paris Tip

A picture of me in front of Unesco. I have been in Paris for the first time in 1997 when ý was 14. We had stayed in Unesco where there were many young people coming from different regions of France or Europe countries.

innocent unless proven guilty

by forfree

I've been living in France for 10 years now. I'm English (from London) and married to a French (very French!) girl. I've been around the clock and would like to give a few survival tips to any foreigners coming to Paris.

1) as with law; innocent unless proven guilty, in Paris you're an arsehole unless proven otherwise. This might not help you, but it helps to be warned that it's rare to be welcomed with big smiles and open arms (like in most big cities come to think of it). I might just add that France has a long history of being invaded and occupied and so the French are wary of strangers, more than any other nation, and do not give away smiles for free. Speaking of which...
2) Smiles won't get you far (they'll think you want something from them). Respect will. The French have an inbred inferiority complex. Bow down to them, show them you NEED their help and that without their help you'd be dead, and you'll get what you want!
3) Parisians stare. Don't worry. They don't think it's rude. So don't worry.
4) Paris has an illegal immigration problem and has had some pretty bad (mostly non existent) integration schemes for ethnic minorities. Result is high crime rates and racism. Watch your bags etc in the metro. Common sense. If you are black, you may have trouble getting into night clubs etc. sad to say so, but you have to work around this... dress well, go with a white friend!
5) Superficial is not a word that the french know. Either they like the look of you or they don't. At least you know where you stand! It's quite a struggle to break the barrier. Say you hate George Bush and Tony Blair and you've got a friend for life, wherever you come from! speaking of which...
6) French talk about everything while they eat: politics, sex, personal problems. It's not considered impolite.
I could go on for ever but I have to go out now. Any Q's or comments... pop me a mail!

The Summer Selection

by fishandchips

I prefer to travel light so only 1 soft bag You will be doing a large amount of walking so a good pair of shoes is essential. I prefer outdoor shoes (eg Merrell) that I can dress up or down unlike sneakers/tennis shoes that can't. I like to travel light so pack items such as convertable pants that double as shorts & longs for day time/night time plans. Just the normal stuff here with the addition of some liquid hand cleaner. I never go anywhere without my small digital camera. Paris has a huge amount to see and take snaps so make sure you are familiar with your gear. My camera has a rechargeable battery which means I have to bring a powerpoint adapter - don't forget yours as a flat battery is fairly limiting.
