If you're looking for cheap...
If you're looking for cheap but central accomodations, try the Aloha hostel in Paris. It's about 4 blocks off the metro, English speaking (as well as several other languages), internet, beer, etc. Nice place to stay.
I loved their breakfast, it was very filling. You can use their kitchen if you want, which is nice so you don't always have to eat out and can save a bit of money. They are located near a couple of markets and food stores so you shopping for the food to cook is fairly easy. They have computers there for your use and internet is fairly reasonable. They have a little common area for thier guests to sit and lounge. Although, they do allow smoking in the common area which was problematic for me. The rooms are fine for a hostel, it is pretty quiet at night. The staff is only OK. It really depends on who is there. Some people were really friendly and others seemed like they couldn't be bothered. They are sort of located near the Eifel Tower...definitely within walking distance.
Directions: Near the Eifel Tower and a Metro Stop (can't remember which one now though).
The Aloha hostel was the hostel I stayed at my first time in Paris. The people staying in the hostel were very nice and accepting. They invited me to hang out when I was traveling on my own. I didn't have any problems with stealing and the accomodations, although not the best hostel I stayed at, were ok. There are internet stations available for a small fee, and a bar to hang out at after curfew (2am).
I stayed here for the first part of an eight day visit to Paris in early June 2004 and found the hostel to be one of the best equipped and organized I have been too in Europe. There is a curfew, which sort of sucks (2am) but the place is well-run with great information for activities to do in the city. The rooms have a maximum of four occupants which helps avoid that dormitory feeling. I was very comfortable there and really enjoyed the 15em arrondis. where it is located.
I would definitely recommend this hostel to someone.
Unique Quality: Sheets can be rented if necessary, but bring your own shower slippers and towel. Walking down the street there is a fabulous view of the Eiffel tower in the distance.
Directions: 15th Arrond, Metro: Volontaire. Bus: 84 and 39.
21 Euros for a Dorm during the High Season.
Unique Quality: Pretty, clean, fairly helpful, and friendly English-speaking staff. Good breakfast included (which is more than I can say for most of the hostels we stayed at!). At 21 Euros for a dorm, it's certainly not the most expensive in Paris, and I'd stay there again.

A semi-rowdy hostel with a mixed crowd. Nothing was too exciting. Although it was interesting to sleep in the attic of the hostel. Cramped living quarters, i slept on a mattress that was located on the floor in a with the ceiling located 3 feet away from my head.
Just a quick recommendation or two would fantastic. I will be in Paris Nov. 24-28...I am travelling alone so a place where I can meet some fellow travellers and a place that gets a little rowdy is fine as long as I am not sleeping with bed bugs!
try the aloha hostel.
that is a bit of a party hostel with a good social scene.
