Christmas in Paris?

by Demay

Any views on the suitability of Christmas time for visiting Paris? What is open, tourism wise?

Re: Christmas in Paris?

by grandmaR

I don't know about on Christmas day but two of my daughters visited on Christmas break. It was cold.

In 2001, they did the Hop-on-Hop-off bus on the 27th and went to Notre Dame. On the 28th they went to the Louvre because rain was predicted but it didn't rain so they also did a river cruise. The following day (29th) to the Science Museum because it was raining, and to Notre Dame for Mass. Then on the 30th to Versailles.

My other daughter's family went in 2009 and I think they also went to the Louvre and Versailles.

Travel Tips for Paris

Hotels: Bathroom Anyone?

by newsphotogirl

I stayed in several hotels while I was in Paris. I made reservations for one hotel near the Sacre Ceour the first day and two other hotels that simply caught my eye as I explored the city. Since I was traveling solo, I looked for clean hotels that charged about $50 dollars a day. Please note that the french are not big on bathrooms/showers. They will be tiny at best. And make sure your room has its own bathroom if that is important to you. I forgot to check at one of the hotels and found that the bathroom was in the hallway. It was very clean and wasn't a problem. I just prefer to have my own.

Exterior of Notre Dames

by daryll

Again the outside church wasnt to my expectation, i thought its gonna be a huge church like St.Paul, London or St.Peter, Rome.

Outside entrance is always a long queue. To avoid having this queue always go early.

Notre-Dame

by Klod5

Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the monuments the more visited in the world!
A visit in Paris must, imperatively to foresee of the time dedicated to this marvel. Make, evidently, the traditional visit, on the square, to admire the portal and the rose window, enter in the cathedral and admire the heart and the monumental whole, go up in the towers if you wish it.
But, I also counsel you to take advantage of the point of view that offer you the embankments, since the other side of the Seine. It is since this place that you will succeed in achieving pretty photos...

Stay off the grass

by Nexus7

Don't walk on park grass, it's very rude. Usually there are signs, but just in case look around. Sometimes there are acceptable places to walk on the grass. I needn't remind you that pissing on it is not a good idea either.

Guide book, map and compass

by JLBG

To visit Paris, you need very good walking shoes, a good guide book, a detailed map and a compass.
Very good walking shoes. If you don't take care, you will have sore feet way before you have finished to visit Paris. Remember that the Louvre is hhuuuuge, Versailles even more and that there is much more to visit. Trekking shoes will be the best if you plan to visit Paris several days in a row, which I do not recommend, but I understand that if you are flying from a long way, that might be the only visit in Paris of your life and that you have to do it that way !
A good guide book. There are many and some are good. You will probably prefer to have a guide book in your language but if you can read French, I highly recommend the various "guide du Routard". They are printed every year and have always reliable tips. You can also have a look at their web site.
