 | | | | Grand Hotel Leveque: Staying not too far from the Eiffel Tower | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
When hubby returned to Frankfurt after a short stint in France, I decided to stay behind to languish in her many museums . Since I always had to tighthen my belt without hubby , I had to search for an economical yet nice place to stay. Horrors! Would there be such a place in France? To my delight, there was. Grand Hotel Leveque was such a find and what was better, this little joint was situated in my favourite marketing street, Rue Cler, not too far from the Eiffel Tower. ( Ah, for those are you who know Paris well, marché rue Cler is one of the most vibrant neighborhood markets around town with lots of grocery shops and chic little delis.)
If you're ever here, look out for the tiny, ancient lift that runs the height of 6 storeys. It's so tiny that it can only fit one fat person at a time. Other than the lift, you'll like to know the condition of the room right? Well, I had a single with no attached loo. However, it was a charming little spot as it had a tiny French balcony, a tiny sink, cable tv, hair dryer and a comfy bed. How much more could I ask for 53 euros? On top of that, my first breakfast came free as I had a Rick Steves guide book.. | | | | Les Argonautes: Sleeping In Paris | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
A hotel with more mirrors than a fun house at the country fair, Les Argonautes pleases your pocketbook and amuses your taste of oddities. (Try to count the used teabags lined up in circular rows underneath the glass top tables in the office and you will know what I mean). Sitting directly above a Greek restaurant, the office and all the rooms have a collection of eclectic furniture and more eclectic decoration, but all are very clean and of decent size. Our bathroom has a very deep bathtub and an endless amount of hot water, which proves to be just what the tired body needs after hours of walking each day. The bed is firm, the sheets are crisp, the pillows are long, the towels are good sized and absorbent, the security is good, the metro stop is a few steps away, and all the basic amenities are there without prompting. One thing that may bother a sleep-deprived traveller is the noise from the row of Greek restaurants below. Bring earplugs, ask for a room in the back and on higher floor, or try not to have any deep sleep before 1AM. After all, the reason you stay in the Latin Quarter is to be in the thick of things. You wouldn't want to defeat that purpose by falling asleep at 10PM, would you?
Hotel Les Argonautes doesn't have email address and doesn't send confirmation via fax. Telephone is the only method of communication. | | | | Hotel Plessis: Inexpensive, comfortable and value | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I found and selected the Plessis for my stay in Paris through extensive internet searching. I then made an internet booking, with my fingers tightly crossed. I’m pleased to say that it fully matched my expectations and I’m entirely happy to recommend it as excellent value for money.
The Plessis is a budget-priced two star hotel in the République area, on the north eastern side of the city area. What appealed to me about it? It is a well run, friendly and impeccably clean and comfortable hotel, with the rooms (which are a reasonable size by Paris standards) having showers and toilets and satellite television. Guests also have free internet access. Importantly, there are excellent Metro connections (Oberkampf about 150 metres with 2 lines, République with 4 lines about 250 metres), ample convenient restaurants, supermarkets, and a laundromat nearby (turn R from the door, right at the first corner, and it’s just across the street). Negatives? I really had none, but the sounds of the street are kept out by the double glazing. As there is no air conditioning, it may be noisy should warm weather require the windows to be left open – the solution would be to ask for a rear room in the summer months, as these open to a rear courtyard. Update: we stayed at the Plessis again in 2007 – and it still represented excellent value. Also, my overdue recognition to the friendly and helpful staff (with the exception of the overnight caretaker who seemed to resent having to open the door for us after hours!) The hotel has no website, but go to Cybevasion for more details, including reviews. You also can book through this Cybevasion site. | | | | Duquesne Eiffel Hotel: The Best Light Show In The City Of Light Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This tip is a contribution from our daughter. The Hotel Duquesne was a charming place. The staff was very conscientious about our safety and comfort. They were also friendly and cheerful; though they spoke English, they obligingly endured our rusty French because we wanted to practice. :-) On the down side, they weren’t especially informed about the area and they didn’t relay telephone messages well. The hotel had a pretty lobby-lounge with a street view. Periodically, the staff offered complimentary drinks from a small bar. We often found hotel guests mingling in the lobby, socializing or waiting for the elevator. (The elevator was slow and small; it was a tight squeeze for two people, two rollerboards, and two backpacks.) There was a rustic, cavern-like restaurant in the basement; we didn’t eat there, as we found it too dark. However, we had an *incredible* Continental breakfast delivered up to us on the morning that we left. Beautiful, lavish, and delicious -- most persuasive wake up call ever! :-) Each of the rooms is decorated in a different color and style. Ours was simultaneously elegant and bright, with red brocade and gold accents. There were plenty of pillows and blankets, but a strange dearth of waste baskets. The bathroom was very small. Interestingly, the shower had a door that was only chest-high to shield it from the rest of the bathroom (rather than a fully enclosed shower). My friend is 6’1” and had no difficulty showering while standing upright. However, we had to be careful not to leave toiletries where they might get splashed.
The best part, hands down, was the view. It was definitely worth the extra price. We had a perfect view of the Eiffel Tower and its twice-nightly light show. I had no idea I’d enjoy the light show as much as I did! Sitting on the balcony, wrapped up in a blanket, it felt like having balcony seats at a concert performance: very private and comfortable, yet immersive. We saw the light show from other vantage points in the city, but nothing topped our balcony experience. N.B. We had to rearrange the furniture in the room in order to have chairs and a table out on the balcony. Our balcony didn’t come furnished, nor was there extra furniture available when we requested it. That said, we really liked moving some of the pieces out of the room, as it gave us more space indoors and made the balcony more inviting.
