 | Paris Reviews | Tips 21 - 30 of 1905 | | Lovely hotel in a very quiet neighbourhood (one-way street). The hotel is listed on the Hôtels de Charme website and it definitely deserves more than the 2* rating it gets from Hôtels de Charme. Rooms have recently been refurbished in provence-style colors. Very clean hotel, kind staff, good breakfast (partly buffet) in a nice and light breakfast room.
Our room was on the 5th floor (elevator!). We had a tiny balcony and a view on the Eiffel Tower. The room was of a normal Parisian size and had every modern comfort: good heating, air conditioning, TV, bathroom with shower, hair dryer, even wash cloths in the bathroom! Very cheap. Also near to the Opéra Bastille (on the principle, Opéra Garnier is for traditional opera and this one proposes more recent productions), to a nightlife area (rue de Lappe) and to Jardin de l'Arsenal (place de la Bastille). This simple and clean 2 star hotel has a great location. The rooms have no pretention, quite bare, but very clean. The bathroom looked like it had been recently redone. The only downside of this hotel is that non of its rooms are non-smoking, so there might be a remnant of the smell (which was really not bad in our room). Ask for a room on the backside as rue de la Huchette is a busy and noisy pedestrian street with restaurants catering for the tourists.
Excellent location in the latin district, next to the river Seine, close to Notre-Dame, and right next to a metro (RER, the suburb train) with a direct line to Charles de Gaulle (Roissy) airport in 1/2 an hour. Situated in the heart of the Latin Quarter on the bustling rue de la Huchette, this little hotel was all we needed. Our room was VERY small, but clean. They do have slightly larger rooms available. The bathroom was fairly new and clean. There was a small desk and very little room to walk around the bed. Our room was on the street side and, at night, got pretty loud. There is a nightclub right across the street. The window blocked most of it, but you could still hear it all. It didn't seem to disturb us too much. Ask for a room in the back. One minute walk to the Seine, right around the corner from Notre Dame...5th arrondisement.
The only English speaking channel on TV was CNN Europe (which is usually a problem when you are with a child), but we were out from sun-up to well after sun-down....so it didn't matter. Continental breakfast is served in the cellar for 6 EURO per person. There is an elevator. It is on a pedestrian street full of restaurants, bars, and shops. Right around the corner from the metro! Finding a place to stay in Paris should be simple enough, right? Well, after countless searches, emails and checking availability of hotels we were willing to say in, we decided on this hotel. A two star hotel in Paris, it is centrally located in the 6 arr. The hotel is clean, has no elevator and the room was a decent enough size. Only a few blocks from the River Siene and Notre Dame, D'Orsay and a few other landmarks, we knew we had choosen the right place for us. My stay here was during my visit in February, 2004.
There is a lift that allows only one person and one bag at a time. The staircase is so croocked you think you will fall to the side from the incline and the buffet breakfast made this hotel an interesting yet comfortable place to stay. Leave a Comment |

We stayed in this two star hotel on our first visit to Paris in 1992. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the hotel was clean and well run, with quite a reasonable continental breakfast. The lift is tiny, but that seems the case in most of Paris - at least there is one! Traffic noise, which can be a problem in many Paris hotels, is nearly non-existent. I didn’t stay here on my recent trip, partly because the cost was a little higher than some other two star hotels; partly because many of the rooms are quite tiny (and some are very odd shapes, one we had was wedge-shaped like a slice of cake, with the door at the narrow end); and partly because the Abesses Métro is served by only one line - I was intent on covering as much of Paris as possible with minimum transfers on the Métro.
The tranquil, romantic and post-cardish setting of place Emile Gordeau almost gives this hotel an air of unreality. Yes, there are good restaurants and shops just down the way and, although we heard that some parts of Montmartre can be problematical at night, during our stay we never felt even slightly uncomfortable in this vicinity. If you are a first time Paris visitor, particularly if you place high priority on a romantic Parisian setting (and note the other comments above) , this hotel would be a good start for your experience of Paris. On my 6th night, I finally settled in a place which I later on called ... HOME! Stayed there for almost 2 weeks under the loving care of Momma Micheline. If there's an instant mami noodles .... she's that Instant Mom! It's here where I experience that local Parissiene feeling, accompanying momma (as I call her) for a weekend tour of the flea market. I hope she already had sold that antique mirror she has been eager to sell, just to buy other flea market stuff that she will later on dead-stock in her basement rooms (right, Carol dear?). Imagine stealing the nearby supermarket's grocery cart to transport that huge & heavy mirror? Cool mom! She even took me to Disneyland and forced me to ride a carousel and all those kiddie rides. Carol, my newfound sister, likewise is a sweet thing. If tounge has the strongest muscle in our muscular system, well, her's more to offer .... talks a lot and never get tired of it, giving directions to tourists getting lost with elaborate info that is into the minutest detail. If you still don't get it...get lost forever! How about breakfast in the garden with freshly picked cherry tomatoes, yes, from their own backyard... and fresh mint leaves for your english tea .... and yes momma.... am allergic to flowers but I love that big pink rose that you put in my bedroom. (SIGH!) I miss Momma Mich & Carol's tandem, the way ...no!... more than I miss Batman & Robin or Tracy Thorn & Ben Wat, or Stanley & Iris, or.....

As we were a group of five friends we have decided that the best option for our 7 days stay in Paris will be to rent an apartment. This possibility was not only more convenient from the cost point of view but gave us also a certain liberty to manage our time according to our wishes. Before choosing we have made a long and detailed research regarding especially the areas where the flats were located as we've been warned by some friends that in Paris are some arrondissements that is better to avoid, especially at late hours in the night (e.g. Montmartre). Our flat was located in the 10th Arrondissement and, although the street was full of fancy names hair style shops for afro people (e.g. Top Chic, Afro King), we had no problem at all. The nearest metro station, Chateau d'Eau, was located at 100m and a supermarket at 15m. The flat was very nice, fully equipped and from the livingroom window we had a very nice view of Basilique du Sacre-Coeur. |

I was lucky enough to be introduced to this hotel when I arrived late one afternoon in Paris to find that my reservation at another Latin Quarter hotel had gotten confused (probably my mistake) and the hotel was full. The helpful man at the desk (and people say Parisians are rude), called around, and found me this alternative hotel at a discounted rate, and walked me to Hotel Cluny, Square so I would not get lost! What a lovely surprise my room was. I had a double room, although I was a single, and therefore got a rare double bed. The room had french doors opening on to a balcony that overlooked Cluny Square, and the wonderful characteristic rooftops of the area. I was even more amazed when I found more french doors and another balcony access in the very modern, well appointed bathroom! There are scores of restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. in the neighborhood.
This is one of the rare places that I bought the hotel breakfast (I think it was 10 euro). It was wonderful to sit in the breakfast lounge, and indulge in the French coffee, the hot croissants and rolls and the fresh squeezed orange juice.
