Christmas in Paris
by dianawitt
Will be in Paris from Dec. 18-26. I'm assuming most places are closed Christmas Day, and plan to cook in the apartment we've rented. Are shops, museums, markets, etc. open the week before Christmas or do things shut down? Please advise.

Many things will be closed Christmas Day but the previous week should be great for sightseeing. You get all the Christmas decorations! There will be concerts and activities you may enjoy too.
You can check all museum closing dates at: http://www.parismuseumpass.com/en/home.php
Have a wonderful holiday in Paris.

You will find that on Christmas Eve (Dec 24th) shops etc close rather earlier than normal, so I recommend doing your food shopping a day or two beforehand. That will also avoid any last minute panics!

The Christmas decorations are beautiful. I was i PAris several yers ago for Christmas. I had Christmas dinner at Les Ambassadeurs in the Crillon Hotel. It was lovely, of course!
I was there before Christmas last year and I am leaving for Paris on Nov. 2nd and will be there til Dec. 14th.
You will enjoy.

Charenton-le-Pont
by Lilasel
A suburb located to the southeast of Paris, France, Charenton-le-Pont lies at the junction of the Marne and Seine rivers. It's such a peaceful place where I've spent some time. Charenton is located next to Bois de Vincennes that allows to its inhabitants to enjoy sunny days next to the small lake. There are many joggers and bicycle riders.
La Grande Arche at Lunch at La Defense
by cochinjew
As mentioned earlier, the french do take their lunch seriously and they get out of their offices.. and usually a sit down affair.
when the weather gets better as it was yesterday, 2 april 2009, the workers in the business district of La Defense pour out and mingle with the tourists and sit on the steps of the La Grande Arche (legacy of Mitterand).. and there is a nice ambience of a carnival ..
Rue Montorgueil: A Touch of Parisian Life
by Jase1177
The Rue Montorgueil is a great pedestrian street in the Les Halles area (just north of the Forum) that is essentially an open-air market. The street is lined with shops specializing in their respective goods: from boulengeries, patisseries, fromageries, flueristes, boucheries, chocolatieres, and poissonneries. You can walk amongst the locals as they purchase foods and other items.
I stumbled upon this place because the apartment I stayed in was the next street over. I feel in love with this place because I could go from shop to shop getting fresh goods to for a snack or meal. For a small part, I felt as part of the locals. Each morning I would get up and grab a couple criossants for our breakfast. There are also a few nice cafes and restaurants along this way. Since it was my birthday trip, I even purchased a couple slices of framboisier (raspberry cake), in which they tied it up in a quaint little package (see picture).
This is a great place to find the food you want if you plan to have a picnic that so many do. The woman at the fromagerie at the end of the street was so kind to me when my French was in adequate (why are the French words for hard & soft so close? lol). Several times I bought a baguette and cheese to snack on during my day.
The Rue Montorgueil is in the Les Halles area, just north of the Les Halles Forum & Rue Etienne Marcel. Either the Les Hallesvor the Etienne Marcel metro stops will give you access.
