paris cost of living per month

by honyhabibi

hi

i will come to Paris, France next year to continue my study at master. i just needed to know a little about cost of living per month, specially about renting a room, kind of flatsharing, as i'm student and i can get along with difficult life time, i wonder if i can rent a room with 300 euro per month, and i also wanted to know if i can have this chance to find a mi-temps job to support living there.

i will be really thankful if you help me, and i will love to hear your advices.
thank you all

Hello. No one can help you until you tell us your citizenship. Jobs are doled out differently to EU citizens and the rest of us. Also we need to know which area of Paris you want to live. To save on transportation, you probably should be near your school.

A room for 300 euros may be possible. An apartment for 300 euros in a safe place will be very difficult. Be patient, the French will be logging on soon and you should get some help. In the meantime, tell us if you are an EU citizen and where in Paris you want to live.

Enjoy your time in Paris.

Yes, first of all we need the info, as Beausoleil mentioned, where your school is and what nationality you are. Very difficult getting jobs w/o proper papers.

hi all

i'm from Iran, and i don't exactly know which university i'll be in, but my choices are: University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne
1 Rue Victor Cousin, 75005 Paris, France and :Université Paris II
12 Place Panthéon, 75005 Paris, France.

and as i heard from the embassy of France in my country, i can have a Permanent residency, when i enter a Parisian university, which allowed me to work.

and i also was thinking about Grenoble or Strasbourg, cause i think the cost of living per month is less expensive.

what's your advice?? which city to chose??

Re: paris cost of living per month

When choosing between Paris and Grenoble, yes, Grenoble may be slightly less expensive . . . but the weather there is not nearly as nice. If you are from a warm country, you might be happier in Paris. Although if you want a completely different experience, Grenoble is a very nice city in the Alps. Type Grenoble into the VT Search Window above and look at the many pictures VT members have posted. That will give you an idea of the surroundings.

Pedmar suggested you contact fellow expats for housing suggestions and that is an excellent idea. Perhaps you could even rent a room from one of them. Having lived in a foreign country, I can tell you that sometimes it is very nice to go home at night and not have to worry about a foreign language or foreign customs and just relax and not have to think about everything you do or say.

I'm sure you'll quickly make friends when you start school so you could also consider staying in a hostel near the school until you find a room. Here is a hotel near the Sorbonne. It's a little expensive but includes free wifi, breakfast and has a washing machine and a kitchen so it might be okay for a couple weeks until you find a roommate. http://www.hotel-marignan.com/html/p1_a.htm

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your studies.

Travel Tips for Paris

Paris is beautiful!!

by leena77

This city is the most beautiful city I have ever seen!! But for making things easy one should have enough knowledge of french language. And do get metro map when you arrive in Paris. It is very important beacause travelling in metro is very cheap. You can buy metro pass too. When I saw Louvre..then Eifel Tower..and then had enjoyed in Sein river cruise.I felt I have come in the dream city.2 days in Paris were most memorable for me.I wish ,I could visit Paris again and again.

What Kind of Traveler Are You?

by BeatChick

So what kind of traveler are you? What is it that you're looking for in a vacation? Perhaps you're the sort that enjoys being pampered at the resort spas? Maybe you go for the adventures in culture such as museums, literary pursuits, castles, jazz clubs? Or maybe you're the sporty type who is in for an adventure? On vacation or holiday some may like to visit the ocean to lie on the beach maybe watch the sunrises & sunsets - is that you?

Whatever type of traveler you are, it is imperative to know if you are traveling with others that way you can best figure out an itinerary to fit all types. Discuss what you like, decide what your expectations are for the upcoming trip, that way everyone gets a little bit of what they want from the trip & everyone comes out happier. As for me I'm definitely cultcha! I love the museums, the expansive cathedrals, the soaring architecture, the language, literary haunts, jazz clubs, bookshops, people watching, seeking the final resting places of certain folk (i.e. Oscar Wilde, Madame Curie, Victor Hugo, Napoléon). These are the things that make me happy!

The people are gracious and friendly...

by hobanma

You must try to speak French. They will appreciate your efforts.

If they can, they will try to speak English if they recognize that you are struggling with the language.

We found everyone to be helpful and friendly.

Chilly Evenings in Paris

by kcrismier

Even when it's warm during the day, it cools down quickly in the evenings in Paris. I always try to pack extra light, and since I was going to Spain after Paris, I decided to leave behind a jacket. Mistake! It felt seriously chilly there once the sun went down. No wonder all the women go around in coats and scarves in the middle of summer.
