HORRIBLE STAY!

Yes. Those are the two words to describe the Grand Hotel de l'Univers which is a Best Western property. We booked directly with the hotel and when the one staff member who checked us in fail to re-confirm the quoted rate and when we asked then slammed down hard the objects whe were holding, well, uh, it turned out that she who quoted the rate to us via email was soo wrong. No apology though-not even a 'desole' or 'sorry'. Nope. She was right no matter what. So arrogant. And don't even bother with their sorry excuse for an elevator that has its own peculiar mind. You see you, a newbie guest, should already know that elevators don't stop when you push that red button when you need it. No. You only push that red button when you notice it's moving between the floors...Huh? Well, we got a very rude explanation from their manager that that is how it works. Wow, so all these years the elevators that we have used were working incorrectly! Aha. Well, we sure got a great does of arrogance. Two for two...both the woman and the manager. Wow, this trip started out great already.

The breakfast and the breakfast cellar were wonderful. Too bad the girl serving the breakfast had some sort of issues as she was so sour.

But over the course of 5 days (lovely 5 days in Paris but dreadfully long in this hotel) the staff went from arrogant and unfriendly to fakey smiley at the drop of a hat. Then they would act indifferent if not weirdly smiling or arrogant.

The room is in the photos (pink room #65 deluxe) and if that's one of their best rooms, well, it's not all that. There are three small cabinets with two on either side of the bed (which was at least a real double bed not two twins put together). The hinges were loose on two cabinets.

Best thing is that you really ought to know (like the elevator) beforehand that you should never use the hairdryer (theirs btw) when you have on all of the lights plus the TV. Yep. If anything else could go wrong, well, we shorted the power in the room twice. There is a reset button high up on the wall under the old a/c unit though. Too bad no one mentions this. We were told by the night clerk to not use the hairdryer with the room lights on. Excuse me? That is so stupid.

This hotel is listed as a 3*. I would say that they may be a 3* but the staff is less than 1*.

So stay here if you love St. Germain as it's off rue de Buci. But do not count on courtesy and helpfulness from any of the staff. And make sure you get a low rate as the deluxe room we had was definitely not worth the full rate of 230 euro/night.

Btw, it's not just us who were treated in this fashion. The staff were just as indifferent to other guests (Americans and Spanish) we noticed.
