Pre renovation- such a bargain.

This was our first time to stay in a European hotel, so we were terribly excited. The location is in the middle of three metro stations and just blocks from the bastille- which is full of lively cafes and public spaces. The staff in 2002 was splendid and very helpful and the rooms themselves ( in 2002) were basic, but very clean. We passed through the hotel again in 2003 and looked at the new rooms which now have a distinct Spanish feel and have been upgraded commensurate with their new prices. My income has increased significantly since 2002 and I would consider staying at the Castex hotel again, but I still like to find bargains and would probably find a place just a bit cheaper. There was a cafe called cafe Poste just a few doors down from the hotel that was so very delicious and had the cutest, most attentive staff. The location and staff of the Castex were fantastic . Rates now start about $185 a night. When we stayed there in 2002 we paid about $55 a night for a double, of course the dollar was stronger than the euro and Castex was just on the verge of remodeling.

Unique Quality: Good views of Paris street life. Basic breakfast was served in 2002.

Cheery and friendly

We booked one night with the hope of extending our stay but they were fully booked. This is a popular small hotel in the Marais area with no elevator, but nice rooms and a very friendly staff.

Unique Quality: The staff was very helpful and thankfully spoke English. When we were unable to extend our stay they recommended the nearby Hotel Lyon Mulhouse and called for us. We found their recommendation to be excellent. We stayed there a second time.

Cute hotel, convenient location

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at Hotel Castex in May 2005. This was our first time in Paris and it was recommended by our friends that we stay in the Marais area because of its nightlife and good restaurants. After research on this site and Venere.com, and price comparisons with other hotels in the area, we decided on Castex.

The hotel is on a side street off of Rue de St. Antoine, which itself has many cheap restaurants, patisseries and boulongeries nearby to satisfy your appetites. Our first night there, we splurged on cheeses, foie gras, baguettes and wine and brought it back to the hotel for a lite dinner in our room. The hotel is not located in the heart of Marais, but is within walking distance of all the sites we wanted to see, including the beautiful Place de Vosges. The hotel itself is a cute and charming botique hotel with all the necessary amenities you would need. The room we stayed in had two huge french windows that opened up to the street, which downplayed the usual smallness of a Parisian hotel room. The room was ultra clean and the bed, although they were two twin beds strapped together) was really comfortable. The bathroom was sparkling white and not even crampy.

The hotel offered a breakfast for 10 Euro a person, but if you bring along Rick Steves' Paris 2005 book, your breakfast is comped. We saved a total of 60 Euro because of that. (Additionally, the book offers a self-guided tour of the Marais area, which conveniently starts at the Bastille, which is a 2 minute walk from the hotel.) Also, the hotel is on the same street as the Post Office, where we were able to buy local and international phone cards to call our friends and relatives. It is also within short walking distance to the Metro and the 69 Bus, which goes all the way down to the Eiffel tower. All in all, we thought it was a great choice to stay at the Castex.

Great location, mixed staff

My boyfriend and I recently spent three nights at Hotel Castex in the Marais. The hotel is near the Bastille stop and extremely convenient to major sights, and the room was clean, nice, and a very good value overall. We were disappointed in some of the staff, however. One gentleman was new and could not even give simple recommendations or directions, while another staff member was quite discourteous when we temporarily misplaced our room key. There was a young woman, however, who was extremely helpful and even made reservations for us for the next leg of our trip. Overall, a good hotel at a great price but you can't expect to rely on every staff member. P.S. The Marais is awesome.

Great Little Hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

My partner and I have returned from a lovely holiday in Paris, having enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Castex. I had read a couple of reviews of the hotel, and quite honestly we were a bit concerned about some of the comments, but we were generally very pleased (and relieved) when we got there.

The double room was quite small, but there was enough room to move about and plenty of storage. What more do you need while you are in Paris? Plus the room opened onto a small courtyard area, that had a table and chairs if you fancied some fresh air.( Room number 1 if you are interested). We were never disturbed by noise at night, it was really quiet, but then we were right at the back of the hotel. The en-suite bathroom was massive, by european standards at least. The room looked like it had recently been refurbished, and it was spotlessly clean. This standard continued throughout our stay (only 5 days...wish it could have been longer), every evening when we returned to the room there were fresh towels and the room had been tidied. We were also really glad of the air-conditioning in the room, and being able to control it manually.

We chose not to have breakfast at the hotel, it sounded a bit overpriced and there are so many other places to choose from in the area, that it just wasn't an issue. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and polite, (especially when I tried out my basic french).

Location-wise, the Castex is great. If you are not feeling very adventurous in the evening there are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area. We kind of stumbled across a little square with some fancy galleries and lovely but fairly reasonably priced restaurants nearby (Place de Louis XIII). The cafes around the Bastille monument are great for people watching and watching the crazy driving too! Plus the hotel is situated about 300 yards from the Bastille Metro station, great for getting to all the main tourist sites around the city.

We would definitely return to the Castex, it was good value for money and a good standard for a 3* hotel. (We have recently stayed in a 3* hotel in Scotland, one of a large chain, and I wish it had been half as good as the Castex, the difference was dramatic!!).

I was very pleased with the Castex Hotel. The staff was polite and helpful. I was happy to find there was an elevator to take me up to the higher floors (sometimes not available in small hotels like this one). The rooms were small, but comfortable. The shower was a bit annoying, but the bathroom was nice overall. The location was terrific. Close to metro stops. Nice area to walk around and check out small bakeries and other small shops.

Quintessential Parisian Hotel

We stayed at the Castex Hotel July 1, 2005 through July 3, 2005. We had originally booked a reservation with another hotel but checked out early (that's another review!). We kind of stumbled upon the Castex Hotel by chance and were fortunate enough to get a room there by calling the night before. This hotel is the embodiment of Parisian charm with the amenities of a modern hotel. Our room was on the top floor and had a sloping ceiling with exposed beams and a large window overlooking the courtyard. The room was pretty small but well decorated and the bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and nice with a good shower but no tub and sadly, no bidet! Amenities in the room included a phone, cable tv and safe. Breakfast was offered downstairs but at 10 euro per person, definitely not worth it. The location of this hotel was excellent. In the Marais neighborhood, walking distance to Notre Dame and close to 3 metro stops. There is a great Asian restaurant across the street. There is also great nightlife within walking distance. Expect lots of U.S. tourists at the Castex because it is mentioned in several guidebooks. While we enjoyed our stay at the Castex, next time I will sacrifice some of the luxury and find something slightly more reasonably priced.

Fine

by TripAdvisor Member Maurice2373

As stated in one of the reviews I read before staying in the Castex hotel, the hotel is just fine. You get what you expect, but you don't get it cheap. Woolen blankets (not so good), small but clean rooms (better), charming patio, but most of all a terrific location (great!). We had a room on the 4th floor, very quiet, but with no fire escape whatsoever.

Hotels in Marais

by la40

My husband is taking me to Paris for a week in June for my birthday. We want to stay in the Marais. I have been researching hotels and have narrowed our choice down to :

Hotel Castex
Hotel St., Louis Marais
Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc

I was also considering Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais and Hotel de Bretonnerie, however, I read some reviews that were not very positive.

I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who is familiar with any of these hotels. Our main concerns are cleanliness, good beds and quiet rooms.

Thanks for any advice that can be offered!

Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc

Have stayed here three times, very nice....a bit too large, but great location, friendley staff.

Hotel St., Louis Marais
Am staying here in April for 2 days. I've rented an apartment for a week, and then when we return from Bern, will stay here. I have been told the owner is a really nice person, sort of like a French Elvis....so am looking forward to it.

We stayed at Castex Hotel last September. I would recommend this hotel. The rooms are very clean, a little small though. The bathroom is a little small, but very clean. The beds are nice. It is on a very quiet street. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the Bastille metro station.
