Not Simenon's "Majestic" maybe, but still nice!

I would recommend this hotel because of its location, its history, its large studio-style room, and its proximity to Laduree's hot chocolate and macaroons. This is the hotel where Hemingway's buddy holed up and then had to be "bailed out" by friends when he couldn't pay the bill, and it's the hotel that inspired Simenon's "Majestic" in his Maigret series. But, it's in the process of a restoration and redecoration and has a very in-progress feel. The rooms are nice, especially for the price, and the location on the Champs-Elysees is fun if you want to stay on the right bank.

Unique Quality: The outside rooms obviously offer nice views onto the Champs-Elysees, but the inside rooms face a lovely, tiled courtyard. The bathroom was actually large enough to turn around in! It had a tub, decent amenities, and a great heater. The staff was pleasant and as helpful as they possibly could be, but several times neither my French nor their English were good enough to make concierge service a possibility. If you are counting on help with arrangements, reservations, or directions, this might not be the hotel for you...at least not for the time being. I'm delighted though that the beautiful facade outside is being saved.

This map shows the location

http://paris-claridge.frasershospitality.com/images/location_map.jpg

the metro line shown is Line 1

On this website

www.transilien.com

you can calculate the rail journey using RER Line B from the airport to Chatelet-Les Halles, changing there to the metro.

The hotel is on the corner of Rue Marbeuf and Rue Francois 1er. Address is
37 Rue François 1er, 75008 Paris, France
put that address into the Google Maps search box and you can see the location.
Nearest metro is also shown on map being George V (George cinq) or Franklin D. Roosevelt stations. Google map can show also the directions of the Metro lines from these stations. and refer you to Paris Transport planner:

http://www.ratp.fr/

From airport you have choices. See:

http://www.aeroportsdeparis.fr/ADP/en-GB/Passagers/Access-maps-car-parks/Paris-CDG/Access/public-transport/

possibly depends on your own circumstances like how much baggage etc.

One way is to take the LES CARS AIR FRANCE line Number 2 that provides a link between the centre of Paris (Étoile and Porte Maillot) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport.
So this bus can drop you off at the Arc de Triomphe on the north west side of the Etoile next to junction with Avenue Carnot.
from here you can take a taxi or perhaps even walk.

You can walk around the Etoile and down the Avenue de Champs Elysees before going down Avenue George V and then turning into Rue Francois 1er.
To walk it may take about 20 minutes. By taxi less than 5.

I completely agree about avoiding Chatelet Les Halles if possible. I think there must be people wandering down there, lost, for ever!

It took me about 5 visits to begin to understand which way to go through the maze of tunnels.

Even when you try to find your way on surfacing from Chatelet Les Halles it is very disorientating indeed. The les Halles complex was an architects dream project in the 70s but a nowadays the traveller's Bermuda Triangle. The original market buildings of Les Halles were grand in the 19th century manner. Pity.

I will take RER B from the airport CDG it will take about 45 minutes maybe less to get to gare du Nord. Then I will take a metro 4 from gare du Nord to Chatelet, then the 1 to either Georges V or Franklin D R.

wen i get down from RER B where should i go to catch metro @ gare du Nord?
