Budget hotels
I have shortlisted a few budget hotels which quoted below 100 eur. on their sites. Hotel Amelie, Hotel Grand Levesque, Hotel La Ser, Hotel Esmeralda, Hotel River Gauche and Hotel Eber Mars. I chose them since they are the closest to the Tower. Any suggestions on which of these to go for or anything else within 10 mins. walking distance to Eiffel. We are an elderly couple on our first visit to Paris.
I also checked out a few hostels. What is a lockout? Are we denied entry to our rooms during this time? Any suggestions on these - are they safe for an aged couple, any hostels without these restrictions.

Can't advice you about specific hotels/hostels but can tell you that a 'lockout' means what it says: you won't be able to get in during that time.
Hostels would be safe enough, but can be noisy as they are popular with young people. You might find a hotel more suitable.

We stayed here this summer (2007)with friends and while not fancy, this hotel was certainly adequate and a short walk from the Eiffel tower and trains. THe Rue Cler area, in which it is located, is wonderful. We tried to get in the Grand Leveque first, but it was full.

i was just scanning through and noticed some good deals on www.ibishotel.com if you book more than 30 days in advance. The promotion is called "Happy 30" and applies to selected hotels. Worth a check!
