Need suggestions on where to stay.

by dalilakhairi

Hello!
So me and my family of 5 including me are going to Paris in March 2011, for a week and currently seeking for cheap apartments to rent. Is it advisable to stay in the center of Paris or do you have any recommended districts?

We're gonna land in Orly and i've googled methods of transportation to take to the city. Any advises on cheap and safe ones? How long does it take to go to Paris Central from the Orly Airport?

http://www.all-paris-apartments.com
http://www.parislogue.com
currently browsing through these & reading some books.

& what's the weather like in March? is it still snowing?

Re: Need suggestions on where to stay.

No-one can possibly tell you what the weather will be like in March. It may be mild and sunny, it may be chilly and wet, it may even snow (although that is less likely). The climate averages may give you a rough idea:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT003570

and you should check the weather forecast much nearer the time of your visit. Bring clothes you can layer and warm, waterproof outerwear though; as you come from a warm climate it's unlikely you will find Paris in March warm, and the chances of rain are quite high. Not necessarily heavy rain everyday though...European rain isn't like that.

As for getting to and from Orly, the airport website gives you lots of information:

http://www.aeroportsdeparis.fr/ADP/en-GB/Passagers/Access-maps-car-parks/Paris-Orly/Access/public-transport/

All types of public transport are perfectly safe. It's up to you whether you prefer to take the RER or a bus. Your choice may also depend on where you end up staying.

Chilly and wet is a good bet! Do stay in the center, much more interesting and beautiful and you will save time and energy on transportation - Left or right bank, that depends on who you are! (I prefer the Left by far; but since my days I know that new areas like the Canal St Martin have opened up.) Just dont end up way out there in nowheresville - For a week stay, which is short , it is worth it to spend more to stay in the center and have a special time!

Try Parissweethome.com I have used it several times with great success for apartments.. and by all means stay central it is a beautiful city to walk in and if you are central everything is close.. the lower # districts are central as you probably have read.
I have used yellowvan and had no problem with a 5 a.m. pick up!
The weather is as said above undecided at best.. layer layer layer... take a small umbrella...
Enjoy

Travel Tips for Paris

Affordable Paris

by palma104

Things that worked for us were having a larger meal during the day vs the evening,& buying goodies from dept' store food halls for evening picnics.
For sit down evening meals, we'd check menus during the day, note the name & address of a cafe in our budget,& return that night for a nice meal.
We also had a index card list of restaurant options from our pretravel research.

In the morning one of us would go out & buy fresh croissants/other pastry, then stop at a market for fresh fruit. The night before turning in for the evening, we'd go to the local monoprix or similar store and buy water, juice, & dry snacks. In the morning we'd eat in our room while discussing the day ahead. You may also adopt a local cafe for your morning coffee and/or a hot breakfast. We did this 2x and the cost was less than the hotel breakfast.

The other reliable sources are the many vendors, food stalls, and shops to buy on the go snacks, crepes, & sandwiches. Strolling hand in hand with my husband along the Seine under the street lights.
Celebrating Mothers Day by attending Mass at Notre Dame and walking over to the Marais
for a late morning breakfast.
When we wanted to eat or snack, exploring the many options available.
Enjoying a nice glass of wine in the afternoon at a cafe and another afternoon indulging in a yummy pastry in the little park beside St.Eglise.
Our Parc du Champs evening picnic with the Eiffel Tower view changing from daylight to nightime.

Paris is a very romantic city.. You must sit in the park near the Eiffel tower.. It's beautiful, quite and very romantic.. I was only in Paris a couple of days, but I plan to visit again this year in June.

XIVth - The National Library Francois Mitterrand

by Maillekeukeul

I can't help it : I looove this place... It would probably be different if many parisians were sharing my views over this quite peaceful place, where reading is more than a pleasure, and pretty similar to relaxing !! But, see, except from students, the place and its neighbourhood are strangely rather empty... You'll find it by strolling around the Metro station : "Bibilotheque National" on the 14th line (the purple one).. The red carpets inside the library were quite a surprise, as nothing, from the green of the trees to the yellow of the buildings' windows, could prepare you for such a bright colour...

Avoiding long lines at the Louvre

by Shopgirl_66

Come early (not later than 30 minutes after opening), so you can avoid long qeues and can go in immediatly. On the first sunday of the month, there is no entrance fee, so the lines are even longer, to avoid this, be there at least 15-30 minutes before opening...
Don't be disappointed of the Mona Lisa. The painting is rather small and there are always too many tourist trying to catch a glimpse... There are many other beautiful things to see in the museum, so enjoy it and take your time.

Other times do not arrive at...

by MVMT

Other times do not arrive at as much: perhaps only one is a piece, that serves more like place as peregrination that like museum. So it is the case of which Marcel Proust occupied, on boulevard Haussman, in which it is today the building of a great parisian bank.
