Apartment Sublet

by emily_nyc

Seeking an apartment sublet in late January that can sleep 2 comfortably. Better/safer and well-located neighborhoods of Paris preferred.

Will you be traveling at that time and might want to rent out your place? Let me know!

Individual VTers only.... housing agencies need not reply.

Hi Emily - if you don't get any responses, you may want to try www.vrbo.com or www.homeaway.com. I have used both successfully, including a rental in Paris a few years ago. Enjoy!

While you may find a VT'r with the perfect property, the odds are you won't. There is a small agency that has higher end rentals I like - welcome2france.com. We rented a flat right above the Tiffany's close to the Opera metro. It was quiet at night and we enjoyed the area around Place Madaliene. As a US person I try and find an agency that has some connection with the US in case there are problems. Have a great trip. Karl

Travel Tips for Paris

Notre Dame

by JUNLI

Notre Dame
Notre Dame is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture. It was begun in 1163 and completed around 1345.

Exceptional features include the three spectacular rose windows, and the window on the north side of the transept.

Books to read before visiting Paris

by Dabs

There are a zillion books set in Paris, here are some of my favorite fiction books set in Paris:

Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, one of my all time favorite books, set in London and Paris during the French Revolution.

Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy, a light romantic read, also set during the French Revolution.

Non fiction
Almost French by Sarah Turnbull, a funny, delightful account of an Australian expat living in Paris with her French boyfriend and her attempts to break through the Parisian social barriers

Piano Shop on the Left Bank by Thad Carhart, I didn't love this book as much as I thought I would but it was still an interesting read, once again about breaking through the Parisian social barriers by an American expat and his reconnection with his childhood passion of playing the piano

A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway, an account of his early years in Paris as an American ex-pat in the 1920s and people in his social circle such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda, Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound, Paris in the 1920s comes alive in his posthumously published memoir.

Still in the pile to be read-French or Foe, and Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong which have been recommended to me

Here are a couple set in France:

A Very Long Engagement by Sebastein Japrisot

Mystery of the Yellow Room by Gaston Leroux

Budget Dining in Paris

by BeatChick

Due to the special ménu offerings at lunchtime, it is cheaper just to eat the lunch at some of the nicer restaurants rather than dinner. Plus, it makes a nice break in the sightseeing to have lunch at a nice restaurant.

Also, I do mostly crêpes from the crêpe vendors for breakfast, a lunch at a nice restaurant, and then dinner at a brasserie (because they are less expensive and you can linger or not). I like to get a quick start in the morning when my energy is high, take a nice break in the middle of the afternoon (1 or 2-ish) and then finish up at night in a place where I can relax but where I don't get too full (makes me too sleepy to walk back to my hotel).

I have an inexpensive restaurant list if you'd like a copy. Just e-mail me at:
mtwissc@yahoo.com
Please provide a good outside e-mail address because VT doesn’t seem to support Excel docs very well. Pretty much everything is under 30€. I can also send you a crêpe vendors list which helps out cheaply with hungry teenagers.

I find that the least expensive places are boulangeries (bakeries), patisseries (pastry shops), fruit stands, street markets, crêpe vendors, & salons de thé (tea salons); there are many of these on the list. Eating excellent budget meals at the following:
Angélina
La Boulangerie
Chez Ribe
L'Été en Pente Douce
Hôtel les Degrés de Nôtre Dame
Nectarine
Trumilou

Through the year - skating at the Hotel de Ville

by TheWanderingCamel

During the winter months, December to the end of February, the Place de l'Hotel de Ville is transformed into a skating rink. Entrance to the rink is free, skates are available for hire for 6 euros.

There is a smaller area reserved for beginners of all ages, and even a toboggan run, reserved for children and the occasional parent!

All this is very popular, especially in the evenings, and neighbouring coffee shops do a roaring trade as do the booths selling hot snacks.

Where the hand of God is a shelter for lovers !

by kokoryko

Notre Dame du Travail

Yes, you read it right: Our lady of the Work. Not in working mood, I decided, to make a bike trip in Paris this morning and in the south of Paris I came across this little church. I had some difficulty, after to leave this place, not because it is a nice and interesting church to visit, but I suddenly almost broke in tears when discovering this statue inside; oh, it is not a world class piece of art, but I looked at it and realised I was in a church: here, the hand of God is a shelter for lovers. Naked man and woman, kissing in a church, protected by God! We are not at St Nicolas du Chardonnet (an integrist catholic church of Paris), here, there is poesy and tolerance, and that moved me so much; may be I am an idiot getting so easily moved.
I better should write about this uncommon church: it appears as a very common religious building from outside, and what a surprise after pushing the door! Industrial architecture, steel pillars, vaults, arches. . . Eiffel and Baltard (the creator of the famous pavilions having his name) are not far. . . . this church has been built by architect and structural engineer Jules Astuc in 1901, fulfilling the wish of the priest who would be responsible of the future church, asking for a building “which would unite the workers of all classes on the field of religion”. So, people working all week in factories, would not go in unknown territories on Sunday. . . . Well!!
The lay out is quite classical ( Pictures 2 and 3), a main nave and low sides, but the pillars are riveted steel pillars, arches very light (and leaving passage to light) steel structures. . . Quite beautiful. The high sides are also steel plates with wide windows ( picture 4), and only the choir has a “classical” stone design. (picture 5). A bit more of this off the beaten path church in the next tip.

59 rue Vercingetorix, Paris 14eme
