OPERAs de PARIS : The step brother : Opera Comique
by mariev
Also known as 'Salle Favart' (it's first name) the Opera Comique, (re)built in 1887 (on the location of the previous Comte de Choiseul's private theater) is now just a secondary implementation from the Opera Garnier.
Initially dedicated to opera comique (a now vanished form of opera) and operette, it has lost importance since the decline of those genres and the creation of the Opera Bastille.
It now hosts the "Centre National d'Art Lyrique" (part of the opera school) and the only performances presented are french opera works sung in french (along with the new opera singers auditions).
But, in 2006, the Opera Comique may find a new youth, after undergoing a renovation (2005), it will gain the status of 'Theatre National' (and that means more budget...)

In 1875 Bizet's Carmen had its world premiere here at the Opera-Comique. Also Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande and Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann had their world premieres here, so this is a hall that is full of great opera history.
The performance I saw here was of The Barber of Seville by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868), sung in Italian with French titles. It was a light-hearted, enthusiastic performance with fine singers and even some acrobats who did funny and appropriate things without getting in the way of the music. (As a paid-up member of the German Rossini Society I tend to feel a proprietary interest in Rossini's operas, LOL, and am always glad to seem them performed well.)

Theater in Paris

We will be in Paris in May. I have not been able to find any information on Broadway type theater in Paris. Is there a theater district? I would be looking to see Les Miz in Paris if it is playing anywhere.

Hello, Larry. I've never heard of a theater district in Paris. I've also never heard of a Broadway type play in Paris. People usually go to London for theater. Hopefully, someone from Paris will log on and tell me I'm wrong and give you the info you need.
In the meantime, try http://www.whatsonwhen.com/
Good luck. You can visit Victor Hugo's house in Place des Vosges and that's interesting . . . although not a night on the town.
Happy travels. 8^)

There is not a particular theatre district in Paris.
You may want to check this website: www.ticketnet.fr
It has sub-sections of different types of entertainment in Paris.
To read the site in English, click on the tiny, tiny British flag on the homepage next to Contact. It took me a while to find it :-)

Great site, Jeannette. You're right. That little British flag is really hard to find. Here's the English URL so the poster doesn't have to search. Thanks so much.

It is not a theatre district but many theatres are close or on the Grands Boulevards (Capucines, Poissonière).
I don't think you can find the Miserables musical anywhere, i don't think they even ever showed it here!

Les Miserables was played at Theatre Mogador in 1991 but it was not very successful in France.

There is no Broadway performance yet in Paris and there is also no particular district to attend a musical.
There are a lot of theaters (generally small) in which you can listen a singer or musicians.
The closest performance from a Musical is an OPERETTE and you can go to the Opera Comique place Boeildieu 2e arrondissement (Metro : Richelieu Drouot) . The current show is LES 3 VALSES an operette of Johan Strauss and his son and I have no idea if it is a good performance.
