    Near the station Paris-Est

    by

Since my train back to Frankfurt was scheduled to leave Paris at 9:06 in the morning (which for me is a dramatically early start), I again wanted an inexpensive hotel near the railway station Paris-East. On the website booking.com I found this two-star hotel just 300 meters from the station. I booked a single room for € 75 per night, including a continental breakfast.

The hotel was advertised as being “recently renovated”, which was true for my floor, though painters were still at work in other parts of the building.

Second photo: My room was simple but perfectly adequate for my needs. It had en-suite facilities, a flat-screen TV and even a hair-dryer, which in my experience is not standard equipment in two-star hotels. The only things missing were towel racks and some hooks to hang things up in the bathroom. The room had free WiFi (or WLAN as it is sometimes called) which worked fairly well most of the time.

Third photo: My room faced the back so it was very quiet. The view was not spectacular, as you can see, but I always like to look out over the metal roofs of the older buildings in Paris, and the metal sidings on the upper floors. Also the older buildings still have individual chimneys for each apartment, though these are not always still in use if the building has been converted to central heating.

Fourth photo: Since the Boulevard de Strasbourg has a bus and bicycle lane going northbound, it is easy to get back to the hotel at night using a Vélib’ bike. To go southbound, you have to take the parallel street Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis.

Fifth photo: This part of Boulevard de Strasbourg is an ethnic neighborhood populated mainly by Africans, so there are African cafés, African grocery stores and several cosmetic shops like this one, F&W, the Fair and White Center, which describes itself as the world’s number one specialist for black and mixed beauty. As the name implies, some of their products are intended to lighten or even whiten the skin of black women – a risky undertaking, since some of the ingredients in these products are often reported to be extremely dangerous.

Dirty smelly hotel with dust bunny's under the beds. The bed covers were very dirty, and the pillows were NASTY and smelly. Bathroom door had no knob and they provided only soap.
Street outside is extremely noisy and dirty.
Staff was not helpful or nice.
Breakfast in the morning was minimal and poor.
All this at an expensive rate!
    DO NOT GO HERE!!

Unique Quality: Smelly, Dirty, Noisy, Bad neighborhood, Expensive

Directions: Nail and Hair district for Africans

Hi, it would be best to let us know your budget to get better suggestions. Or are there only specific budget hotels you can choose from?

Ok. On tripadvisor.com you can find reviews of a Hostotel Liege Strasbourg-not sure if this is the hotel you're referring to. Here's the link to the reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g187147-d283884-r2606036-Hostotel_Liege_Strasbourg-Paris_Ile_de_France.html

Unfortunately there are no reviews for the Altono. Anyway, hotels near train stations, in general, are usually basic hotels. Train station areas, again, in general, are not the best areas to be located. However, it also depends on the actual location so sometimes it's not so bad.

If you want some other ideas, check out www.ratestogo.com. I got a really nice hotel deal through them last summer. Personally, the area around Gare du Nord looked scary to me and I used to live near NYC!
