Why take a bus when there are many trains (TGV) that can take you into Zurich and drop you off in the center of the city. Fares are about 125 USD, aout the same as a bus and there are about three or four that goes to Zurich daily. It's a busy route. As for the bus, I really do not know , sorry, but just a suggestion from a train traveler. Cheers Tommy x

Totally agree with one addition: if you follow my advice how to book French train tickets you will get probably much cheaper fare than on the bus.

Train travel is not only more relaxing - it is faster, too. Now it could happen, it is even (much) cheaper on the days you want to go.

(this is the second tip: "how overseas visitors can buy French train tickets")

You are even in much easier situation than tourists from USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand who are tricked into a special web site (RailEurope) - also belonging to French Rail - but which is charging much more.

This is the proper link: http://www.tgv-europe.com:80/en in English .

Unfortunately if you chose the Spanish language

http://www.tgv-europe.es:80/es

and put "Mexico" as residence you will be re-directed to English language saying that "they serve customers better this way" (isn't it genial?). But the prices are still the same. I just tried and the price for Mexicans is the same as for Europeans... only Americans, Canadians and Australians/NewZealanders pay a "rip-off price".

In either case for a fictive date of October 29 I got price of 62 Euro with TGV leaving at 8:24 in the morning.

You can let them send you the ticket if the time is sufficient (2-3 weeks, I would say). If your travel is closer, than just pay for the ticket on-line and collect it at the ticket machine or with a live agent in Paris at the station.

What other options are there if the trains are disrupted due to the strike? If taking a flight also requires the trains in the first place to get there. Besides, last minute flights are bound to be costly

Travel Tips for Paris

Little and Interesting Streets

by fishandchips

Paris is a very old city. As a consequence it has a vast number of small winding streets that one can easily get lost and found in. I love just walking around (map in my bag) and taking in the sights and sounds of this great place.

Around the Latin quarter there are some interesting small streets with out of the way shops selling all sort of fascinating item.

In this tips photo the small street had a beautiful park hidden off to one side. I spend some time here reading a book as I rested from a couple of hours on my feet.

Something seems to be leaning here...

by NC_Ziggy

This was yet another example of art for the masses! I came upon this in the same area just a short walk from La Defense and again it adds and provides a contrast to what would be only buildings otherwise...

As I scanned this picture, I noticed for the first time that while the oblisk seems to be perfectly vertical, the building in the background appears to be leaning inwards! Optical illusion? I have no idea... What do you think?

See it all!!!
I know it isn't...

See it all!!!
I know it isn't easy for everyone to stay more than a couple of days in Paris, but if you can, you will not regret it! If the cost is what worries you, email me and I'll fill you in on ' Cheap Paris'!

The best time to visit would have to be in the spring or in the fall. The summer is definately a 'no-no', unless you enjoy being surrounded by millions of other tourists, and the pollution; indeed, Paris' smog sometimes gets warnings for people with asthma problems in the summer time. The winter time is a 'so-so': Love rain?

Dining, drinking, etc

by karimpls

What I've learned:
Parisiens do not fight over who will pay the bill.
If you want a drink, you must ask for it.
If you want a second drink, you must ask for it. An empty glass means nothing to the barmen.
If you want your check, you have to ask for it.
Waitstaff and barmen do only one thing at a time. Want a glass of wine? Wait til he finishes sweeping the floors
If you are Vegetarian or Vegan, DO NOT TRUST the waiter when he tells you it is vegetarian. It probably isnt and may actually contain huge chunks of meat!
If you do not finish your meal, you will get an eyeroll from the waiter.
If you send back food, they treat you poorly.
If you send back wine, it is not uncommon for them to pour the wine back in the bottle.

Comfortable shoes!

by amyhouston

Do not forget to bring comfortable shoes!!
There are cobblestone area, it is not very comfortable walking with heels or shoes with thin soles. You will not go too far without very comfortable shoes.
