Hop On - L'Open or Les Cars Rouge
by MapleMoose
We love getting oriented with a hop on and off tour wherever we go. It also serves to see places that we will not get to during the remainder of our visit. I see that there are 2 of these in Paris, a 9 stop tour offered by Les cars Rouges and one offered by L'Open Tour with many many more stops (perhaps too many?) The latter has one grand route and 3 sub routes. Does anybody here have experience with these. I can see the prices, durations etc. so I just want to know about the quality. One question I have is does the "cars rouge" go to many spots off of the main 9 stop route or is it just the quickest route with only audio guide for the big ones? Merci.

Thanks Ped but I have seen the websites. Just wondering if there is any other advice I could get about them. If you say the "scenic route" then that may answer my question. The first tour has so many more stops but I would be just as happy with the cars rouges as long as they covered a variety of sights besides the stops. To a first day person the 4 lines could be confusing. I have experienced the multiple lines in other cities.

My friend in Paris recommended the Open Tour though it was rainy when we were there so we opted out of that...for next time it is on the list!!
Travel Tips for Paris
Along River Seine
by Janni67
The River Seine runs through Paris, dividing it into two parts: The Left Bank and the Right Bank. A great way to see Paris is by taking a Bateaux-Mouches cruise along the River Seine. You'll get terrific views of Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower as well as other sights.
Take in the view!

There are many spectacular viewpoints all over Paris. This particular one is a place I definitely recommend - the top of the Arc de Triomphe.
The view in the picture is the one looking towards La Defense - with the "Grand Arche" in the distant centre. From the Arc de Triomphe the road system fans out like spokes in a wheel - making you feel right at the centre of things. You also are right in the line of the many monuments that run all the way from the Louvre to La Defense.
Other great views can be found at Sacre-Cour, from the top floors of the major department stores (for free) and from the Eiffel Tower and the top of Notre Dame (both of which you have to pay for.
Getting to the top of the Arc de Triomphe is 7 euros for adults (free if you've already got a museum card). It's open daily except public holidays from 10am until 11pm (10.30pm in winter). I've only tried the daytime view so far - given the great lighting of Paris after dark, I should give the nightime a go on my next trip...
Notre Dame - Get There Early
by eho
Go to Notre Dame. But make sure you arrive well before the closing time.
I got there two hours before closing, but there were two lines -- one to go to the dome and one to enter the cathedral. I went into the main cathedral first and then found that the line to the dome was closed already!
Sunbathing Seine River Bank
by Mikebb
Whilst on our river cruise we observed many locals enjoying the sun and beauty of the river whilst they sunbathed on the river embankment. I wonder whether they were interested in watching the tourists go by on their river cruise, I know most tourists on board were looking at the sunbathers.
We did not see anyone swimming in the river, I do not know if it is allowed or too dangerous due to the river traffic.
Packing List

Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Wear something other than oversized NIke's cos they tend to stand out. WHEN IN ROME DO AS THE ROMANS DO! But then again who am i to tell you what to wear! haha! Get travel insurance. BUy photo film from wherever you are coming from. Be sure to use lead bag to protect your film(due to strong xray scans). If it's going to be real sunny use KODAK ROYAL GOLD 100. If it's cloudy then use FUJI SUPERIA 400. Dont go for fancy zoom cameras. Stay with 28-70mm zoom. I would suggest minolta 28-70 freedom explorer zoom. Or olympus stylus epic 35-70. My camera is a yashica t4-fixed 35 mm. Dont carry around big SLR cameras unless you are in paris exclusively for photography. It's painful to carry it around.
