May 1

by FraMauro

I seem to have picked the wrong week to visit Paris (Apr 29-May 4). I have four full days to sightsee, but the Louvre, Arc de triomphe and Opera are closed on May 1 and Versailles on May 1 & 3. Are there any other attractions which are closed on May 1?

Opera - There is a performance on May 2 at 1430 hrs. so I suppose the opera will be open only until 1300 hrs. Is there an admission fee to see the auditorium or is it free? How long will it take to see it fully?

Louvre - Any idea which rooms these are in - Mona Lisa, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, Michelangelo's Rebellious Slave, Dying Slave, Venus de Milo, Napolean's apartments. The website says some of the rooms are closed on particular days.

Versailles - Can I buy the combined metro & admission tkt at the metro station itself? I read that there is a tabacco store called "La Civette du Carrousel", which is situated in the Louvre Galery which offers one day open admission tkts to the Louvre, Versailles & Musee d'orsay. Is it still open?

Thanks

I can only write about the Louvre, as we were there about a month ago. We saw all of the pieces that you are interested in seeing. The brochure that you can get as you enter the main part of the museum has a map that shows where all of these (and other important) features are. The direction to the Mona Lisa and Venus have signs pointing you there. Wing Victory is in one of the main staircases.

The only one we had trouble getting to was the Napoleon's apartments, and that was due to certain areas being closed the day we were there and us getting mis-oriented. We did find it eventually, and they are certainly worth the visit.

Travel Tips for Paris

Paris Scams

by parisscam

Lido - but watch out! They run a credit card scam when you are paying your bill. They use an outrageous exchange rate and tell you that this is the amount in your home currency. The rate they quoted us was 35% more than what our bank was charging! I refused to sign it and told them that I was willing to pay in Euro, and wanted to see the manager. They told me I'd have to wait to the end of the show, I did and the manager seemed quick to reverse it --- BUSTED!

Also - beware - there is a line to add a tip. Tips and tax are all included in the price already in Paris. Another money grab! Madeline Foyer - On weekdays, visit the Madeline Foyer for lunch. It seems to be a group of Catholic Ladies Auxiliary and for a home cooked wholesome meal (including real vegetables which are generally not available in Paris anywhere), try this. For about 6Euro and another 1E if you want an alcoholic drink with lunch, it's such a steal. So interesting to see the business culture and the ladies are SOOOO nice!

Go to the top of the tower! ...

by Jschukal

Go to the top of the tower! Like idiots, we decided to take the stairs, I suggest you don't do that. Anyway, here are some great shots from the top looking out at the city. This one shows the fields leading up to the tower, in the evening they are packed with people playing soccer and lounging around and couples gazing at each other.

Paris streets - Boulevard Delessert

by kris-t

At 10, boulevard Delessert you will find one of the public drinking Wallace fountains. Those small cast-iron sculptures recognized worldwide as one of the symbols of Paris.

The 66 large model fountains and the 9 small model fountains work from 15 March to 15 November .

No trust in anyone :)

by MedioLatino

Some shops (particularly big retail chains) in Paris do not trust anyone! :)

If you have a bag, you will get a plastic lock like this one, which will only be removed after leaving the cashier.
