Hotel Au Royal Cardinal will do for a place to sleep
by TripAdvisor Member fisheater101
This hotel is located in a good area, only one block away from a metro station and directly across the street from a great crepe place and bakery.
The rooms were small (had a 3 person room with 1 double bed and 1 twin bed) but clean. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. I would say it was ok for the money (95 euro per night).
Small Rooms, Perfect Location, Nice Staff

I stayed at the Hotel Royal Cardinal with my mother and sister for a week. The rooms are wee and a bit frayed around the edges, but always clean and perfectly serviceable. It can be noisy at night if you have your windows open and your room is on the street side, but with the windows closed the rooms are virtually soundproofed. The staff was fantastic (hi Anna!), going out of their way to help us find a doctor's office for a (non-emergency) medical issue that needed attention, and booking a shuttle to the airport for us. There are lots of eateries close at hand, as well as a pharmacy, post office, ATM, and metro. Great value, great location.
Excellent value for money, good location

Stayed at this hotel from 30 December 2004 to 2nd January 2005. We had 3 double rooms, all quite small but adequate as we were hardly in them. Hotel is small and clean and ideally situated. Walls are extremely thin but noise wasn't a problem. Bathroom had a half bath with seat and shower - difficult to get in and out of. Ask for pillows as soon as you arrive as you'll need them, the long round bolster you get instead of pillows is uncomfortable. When it comes to value for money you can't fault this hotel, I would definitely go back.
Centrally-located and great value-for-money

We are a Canadian couple and we stayed at this hotel, in Room 533, from August 28 to September 2, 2004. The hotel is very conveniently located in the 5th arrondissement, close to boulevard Saint-Germain, Notre Dame (a 5-minute walk), the Pantheon, and rue Mouffetard (a definite must-see, especially at night).
Our double room was small, but not stifling. The bathroom was clean and towels were replaced daily (be sure to leave any used towels on the bathroom floor). The balcony was quaint with its red geraniums and the street noise was not unbearable (after a long day's walking and sightseeing, we slept quite soundly). On a few nights, we left the balcony doors open for a little bit of night air while we slept, but unfortunately found ourselves mosquito-bitten in the morning. You may want to bring some insect-repellent, just in case.
We ate a nice, affordable breakfast downstairs at the Royal Jussieu almost every morning. There is a Middle Eastern restaurant, La Voie Lactee, next door which serves a delicious and hearty shawarma. A few doors down, there is a corner store, where we bought bottles of water and other little snacks. There is a small grocery store, Franprix, on rue de Poissy, where you can buy food and acceptable wine for as little as 2 Euro per bottle. We paid 86 Euro per night to stay here and would return on future trips to Paris.

We loved this hotes!

My family and I stayed here on June 1 and 2 and we loved it. It was so close to Notre Dame and right in the Latin Quarter. We had a room for four which was not too big but big enough. We slept with the windows open and had no problem with the noise - no mosquito problems. The metro stop was only a block away and there is a great crepe shop right across the street. We bought crepes there and wine at a little grocery store about a block away. The hotel is old and quaint. Just as you would imagine a french hotel to be - lots of character - and the staff was very responsive. There are a lot of restaurants nearby but my kids were really craving a good american meal and about a block away was a restaurant called 'Breakfast in America' which served typical diner food. We had BLT's, burgers, strawberry shakes, and pancakes at about 10pm. They also had Dr. Pepper and glasses with ice (not one or two cubes but completely filled!) We would go back to this hotel in a minute. The room for 4 cost about 130 euros a night. ($165)
Location good, everything else WASN'T

The location of this hotel is great, but the room and bathroom left a LOT to be desired. We stayed for 4 nights on the 3rd floor, and the road noise was pretty terrible. TONS of mopeds and motorcycles blazed down the road ALL night. We are a young, fairly easy-going couple, but this is NOT somewhere we would stay again. The bathroom smelled like urine from the day we got there, and didn't stop, even after they "cleaned" it. The pillow is a long, tootsie roll thing that is attached to the bed that is EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Also, you get 1 nice towel, and 1 towel that is like a bath mat (rough and nasty). The towels were stained, which matched the walls and wallpaper. Also, it seems like they added the bathrooms to the rooms after the place was built. The plumbing in the bathrooms works so that any time anyone in a room above you flushes their toilet, the water runs down the pipe in your bathroom, at a VERY loud rate. This is possibly where the urine smell comes from. There is no A/C, so we slept with the winddows open, which would have been nice but for the constant noise. Overall, the location is good, and we spent much of our time out and about, but it would have been nice to return to a clean room. I opted to go to the bathroom in public restrooms as opposed to our bathroom! THere are several other hotels close-by (on this same road, in fact) that are about the same price, and seemed MUCH more clean.
Excellent located

It's a very well located hotel. Only 5 minuts walk from Notre Dame, and 3 minuts from the Panteon. Is the best zone for visit, and going out at night. There are so much restaurants in the zone (between Bv.St Michel and Bv.St Jaques, and also Rue Saint André des Arts)
The builing is very ancien, The stairs are very narrow and small rooms. It offers right what we looked for in a city in which we only go to the hotel to sleep: a bed (with rolling pillow), Wc and shower. We didn't need anything else. Staff offers a correct treatment, but not either great treatments. Following an advice in Tripadvisor we didn't contract breakfast, although it seems impossible to have breakfast (continental breakfast) in the zone by less than 6 euros.
The Hotel is located only 50 meters from subway "Cardinal Lemoine"
If I go to Paris again, and I don't find anything cheaper in the zone, I will go at the same hotel again.

A pub with a good selection of beer.
by alex0312
Hello. I was wondering if there is bar/pub in Paris (zones 1-4 if possible) that has a large selection of bottled Belgian and other European beers? I'm really looking for an old London type pub, not a fancy lounge. I found a few online but they don't have a website or a list of beers so I'm not really sure of their selection of beers. May be somebody knows a store in zones 1-4 that offers a large selection of beers that would be great too. Thank you for any advice.

We stayed at Hotel Royal Cardinal on Rue des Ecoles and passed Biere Academy every day, but didn't stop in. Have you seen this website:

Yep, I've seen this site. It doesn't really give a list of beers though. By the way, why is beer so expensive in Paris? From what I've seen, it averages about 6-7 Euro/bottle, unless I'm looking at very overpriced touristy bars?

Have you looked at this site - list of Paris beer places with ratings provided by customers?

As comments reveal, Paris is not the place for London Pubs.
I've had a few beers at Falstaff at Bastille as it's a great people watching spot: the over-priced beer - a secondary consideration.
