A 2 star gem

What a delightful little gem of a hotel, down a quiet residential side street 5 minutes walk from the hustle of the Bastille.

A much externally altered 18th century building, the Hotel Saint Louis is spread over 4 floors of rooms - approx 15 in total - and is full of character - sloping stairwells, tight corners, attic rooms and a tiny basement breakfast room.

Do not expect much in terms of facilities - it's 2 star afterall. But a perfect place to sleep if you want something simple, atmospheric and a room that does not have large plasma screens, overstuffed sofas, writing desks etc.

Being old it is not necessarily the cleanest hotel - and I do mean that from a judgemental, derogatory position - high ceilings and dark corners result in the occasional cobweb and the grouting around the bathroom tiles may not be pristine. But it all adds to the experience.

Unique Quality: We were lucky enough to be in the attic room - a 2 storey affair, the 2nd floor offering an incredibly steep ladder and a single bed in the eaves (wouldn't want to sleep there but it added to the character). Large king-size bed (as well as another single bed), spacious room, more than functional ensuite, delightful view out onto the street (and other apartments opposite!). It was a delight and perfect for a few nights in Paris – we did not need plasma screens or fancy toiletries - it was functional comfort.

Be warned though - steep spiral staircase to reach all bedrooms. By the time you reached the attic with your suitcases, you certainly knew about it.

Breakfast (continental) available at 10 euros

by lutteuses

Has anyone ever heard of or experienced this hotel? It has been recommended somewhere, by someone, but we can't remember who or where? (Must be our old age)

Anyway, anyone who can give us input we would be most grateful. Or oanyone who can reccomend similar acommodations in this area, we would also be most grateful.

Thanks,
Ls
