Lovely Parisian hotel
Hotel Verlaine is in Butte aux Cailles, a charming neighborhood with Place d'Italie convenient for the metro and mall shopping. It was a good base for getting around the city and dealing with needs like laundry (at the laundromat just a block away).
The hotel is pleasant, the rooms are the small size you would expect in Paris, but with nice bathrooms and furniture, as well as those elegant balcony windows you see on old Paris hotels, at least in front. The couple who run it were very nice; I spoke my schoolboy French to the woman and she replied in simple French for me. Only complaint was that they have you turn in your key when you go out and one hot day we came in exhausted from sightseeing in the late afternoon, the maid was still cleaning the rooms and had the keys, so we had to wait for 10-15 minutes in the lobby.
We didn't buy breakfast, so can't comment on that except that you can get coffee and pastry (or yogurt) at Brioche d'Oree in the Italie2 mall down the street for less than half the price, and we thought it was pretty good.
