I booked my hotel for the Paris meet so I could stay in the 5th where most people seemed to be staying and found the Hotel de l'Esperance listed in Frommer's Budget Travel "Secret Hotels of Paris" (after which of course it's no longer a secret, now is it?) They had one of their bath/shower rooms available for 95E per night, we ended up in room 47 on the 4th floor. There is a lift, naturally with the blazing hot ceiling lamps and just enough room to fit 2 people and their luggage.
The desk staff was always pleasant and welcoming and spoke English well, we didn't eat breakfast so I can't comment on that, breakfast is extra (currently 9E) and there is a small breakfast room to eat it in.
There is a computer with free access in the lobby but with no chair, probably to discourage people not to hog it. We didn't ask about wifi since we were able to use the lobby computer.
Unique Quality: Room-large enough for both of us to comfortably walk around, bed was soft especially after sleeping on the stiff Ibis beds for the rest of the trip. The rooms have a/c which we didn't need, with the windows open there was a lot more noise than I thought for a reasonably quiet street but with the windows shut it blocked out most of the noise.
Bathroom-tub & hand held shower which I don't care for, the bathroom always ends up getting wet and it takes more time to shower. Bath and hair gel and bar soap for toiletries, hair dryer in the bathroom
Loved the location, just a couple of blocks from Rue Moufettard and all of the restaurants, shops, crepe stands, gelato shops and herds of college students from the nearby Sorbonne in the evenings.
Directions: Closest metro: Censier-Daubenton, about a 5 minute walk
Closest RER: Luxemborg, you can take bus 27 to get there
Hotel de l’Esperance. Genuinely friendly people running the place or working there. The location was great, the area has a genuine neighbourhood feel despite the many tourists, with lots of great little shops around. We chose it because it was recommended by Lonely Planet.
79 Euro for a double room, very clean, TV.
Breakfast was 7 Euro per person.

Unique Quality: In the heart of Quartier Latin. The location was great, the area has a genuine neighbourhood feel despite the many tourists, with lots of great little shops around. Genuinely friendly people running the place. Very close to the Pantheon and relatively close (walking distance) to the center.
Directions: Quartier Latin
Hotel de l'Esperance is one of the better hotels I've stayed in while visiting Paris. We stayed here for four nights over New Year's Eve 2004 and again for New Year's 2005. It's in a good location in the 5th arrondissement, very near Rue Mouffetard, and not far from the Latin Quarter and Montparnasse. The Mouffetard area is one of the hidden gems of Paris and once you discover it you'll keep coming back to see more.
The lady in charge of the place is quite a character and the rest of the staff were very friendly. The rooms were very warm and had shower or bath, as well as a television showing plenty of channels. Most were French though we also had BBC and CNN. Our room was smaller the second time we stayed here though it was still fine. Price for a double with bath is 86 Euro while a double with shower is 78 Euro.
Very nice little hotel, very clean and quiet. The owner, originally from ex-Yougolavia, is matron-like but really nice.
Well located near rue Mouffetard which is narrow and very typical of the old Paris. There is a fun market taking place there on Sunday mornings. Lots of students around during school year as lots of schools and colleges are located in this district, Quartier Latin.
Unique Quality: Call for reservations. You might also be able to reserve this hotel through the internet hotel reservation companies.
Breakfast is not included in the price and costs 6 euros.
Directions: Quartier Latin (5th Arrondissement) at the bottom (Southern end) of Rue Mouffetard, near the church St Médard.
