Hotel de l'Esperance

Comfortable 2* in the 5th

I booked my hotel for the Paris meet so I could stay in the 5th where most people seemed to be staying and found the Hotel de l'Esperance listed in Frommer's Budget Travel "Secret Hotels of Paris" (after which of course it's no longer a secret, now is it?) They had one of their bath/shower rooms available for 95E per night, we ended up in room 47 on the 4th floor. There is a lift, naturally with the blazing hot ceiling lamps and just enough room to fit 2 people and their luggage.

The desk staff was always pleasant and welcoming and spoke English well, we didn't eat breakfast so I can't comment on that, breakfast is extra (currently 9E) and there is a small breakfast room to eat it in.

There is a computer with free access in the lobby but with no chair, probably to discourage people not to hog it. We didn't ask about wifi since we were able to use the lobby computer.

Unique Quality: Room-large enough for both of us to comfortably walk around, bed was soft especially after sleeping on the stiff Ibis beds for the rest of the trip. The rooms have a/c which we didn't need, with the windows open there was a lot more noise than I thought for a reasonably quiet street but with the windows shut it blocked out most of the noise.

Bathroom-tub & hand held shower which I don't care for, the bathroom always ends up getting wet and it takes more time to shower. Bath and hair gel and bar soap for toiletries, hair dryer in the bathroom

Loved the location, just a couple of blocks from Rue Moufettard and all of the restaurants, shops, crepe stands, gelato shops and herds of college students from the nearby Sorbonne in the evenings.
