Paris 4 nights (but 3.5 days only)

by sandeepgarg

We are 9 persons (4 adults, 1 Sr. Citizen 69yr., 4 kids 13,9,7,6 yrs. We shall be arriving on 17th May morning in Paris for 4 nights from Brussels (by Thalys).

We are staying at the Apartments Cosy Cadet.

Now what would be the right way to reach the hotel from the Thalys station?

Can we do it by Metro etc, with the children and luggage?

Now I have planned:

17th May evening Seinorama tour with illumination and Lido 1st show, as we have kids along.

18th May to Asterix Parc. (How do we get there and back? Do we use Metro or pay for coach?)

19th May we would like to Visit Louvre and Versailles (Preferably with fountain show in evening). How do we go about this? Do we take the organised tours or public transport etc.?

20th May Disneyland. Should we take the coach, or private minibus or public transport like Metro etc? What will be faster and convenient?

What other activities can we do, especially in the evenings? I would love a wine tour or any other such tour. Do suggest.

21st May morning we leave for Switzerland (Geneva) by TGV. Would prefer to take the flights, but more expensive.

Thanks a lot in advance friends.

To answer your first question about how to get to your apartment I went to http://www.ratp.fr/. I looked at both bus and metro schedules. I think it would be easier to take the bus than the metro where you would have to change at Gare de l'Est and in addition there would probably be stairs. If you think you would prefer the metro, check the above site for information.

BUS: From GARE DU NORD take bus 26 in the direction Gare St. Lazare. Get off at Metro Cadet which is just a short distance from your hotel. It should take no more than 7-10 minutes. Ask at the information desk in the station where to buy tickets for the bus.

For the other information, it is probably better to ask when you check in at your hotel. I am sure they have all those details.

You might find it easier to walk if your luggage is not too much for each person! by the time you go up and down the metro and through the ticket booth and onto the train -- trying not to lose someone!! check on google maps but it is walk able!!! From Gare du Nord to Rue Cadet... about 15 minutes walk!! straight along Rue La Fayette... If you want to do tours Cityrama is a good site to check out
For Disneyland you could take the Roissy bus from the opera to CDG airport and from there the Disneyland bus??
Sorry the rest i don't know!!1 the Louvre and Versaille in one day may be too much!! Enjoy

You will never see the Louvre and Versailles in one day.
The Louvre can have long queues for tickets for a start and there is just so much to see in there.
As you want the fountain show in particular, I would choose that one option rather than both.

Don't hate me but I gotta...

Don't hate me but I gotta admit something. I thought the Eiffel was...a big monstrosity in steel. *duck*
In a way I was a bit disappointed when I first saw it. It was a cloudy day and there were green nets and scaffolding around the bottom part. I guess they do the most repairs during the winter when there are less tourists visiting. My feelings toward it, of course, changed when I saw it at night and I would love to go back and see it again when the weather is better and the nets are gone.

The stunning view over the city

by Jenniflower

The view from here has to be the best over Paris. The one from the Eiffel Tower is gorgeous in all directions, but there is something magical about this one. I love this particular photo, catching the bird atop the typically Parisian light. The domes of important landmarks clearly visible in the distance.

All very atmospheric and surreal. Just lovely :)

Brasseries (3)

... We were enjoying it, people watching when two of our neighbours stood up. One man in a shirt & pants with paints on it (probably an artist), the other in a clean but equally casual attire. They asked whether we were Malagasy. To the question, we replied "Yes". From that, a conversation started. The presumably artist was drunk & very volubile about his Malagasy connection whilst the other one was more quiet. The latter was, in fact, a keen lover of Madagascar. He also owns a pharmaceutical company. His business requires frequent travels to my island. These two guys happened to know a Malagasy writer who was very active in fighting for Madagascar's Independence. We talked about Madagascar's situation. Inevitably as there was a time in 2001-2002, the country had experienced a political crisis ensuing the 2001 presidential elections.

Funny to talk to strangers about this great man (the Malagasy writer, not the drunk man) who joined his efforts to others (me included) during the crisis. Despite the fact that the writer could read what I wrote about the crisis, to raise awareness about the situation (as an activist within an online community) & that he had sent an encouragement to me via a common friend, I felt it weird to talk to strangers about a cause dear to me. Even if I had the feeling those two guys shared the same opinions as mine (we all wanted the dictator to step down as he lost those elections). Even if they know where the writer lives (he & the drunken man are 14ème arr. locals) & that I was dying to enter in contact with him again [during the crisis, an error made me mistaking his e-mail address for another one. My e-mails never got across]... despite all those favorable signs, I felt only to close ones I'd talk about such thing... but that's Paris effect. Can be a cosmopolitan city but out of the places & areas tourists use to rush & flock in, people still take some time to talk to each other at a brasserie terrace, watching the world going by, sipping the nth pint of beer, glass of kir...

Packing List

Suitcases or holdalls. Bring a jacket and/or umbrella. Even in the summer rain is a threat. Yes - and lots of film. If I was rich I'd only see Paris through a lens as everything is worth photographing!
