Magic location near Place des Vosges

    by

The part we enjoyed the most was hearing classical music playing outside our window. Different groups play under the Arcades at Place des Vosges and the music drifts up through your window if you open it.

The hotel was very friendly, clean and well situated although I prefer to be a little closer to a Metro stop. There are many wonderful shops and restaurants in the area and of course, the art galleries on the Place.

Unique Quality: The Place des Vosges is one of the most magical parts of Paris. It's a great place to go relax in the evenings or even take a break in the afternoon and watch the Parisians with their children.

You can walk to many of the major tourist sites and if you head the other direction, you can avoid the major tourist sites. Depends on what interests you!

Be mindful that you must climb a short flight of steps to get to the world's smallest elevator.

Directions: Just off the Place des Vosges and about a block from public parking (expensive public parking)

Hotel de Sully

Just off Place des Vosges, Hotel de Sully provides a nice passage back into the Marais. The edifice was constructed in 1625 by Jean Androuet Du Cerceau. It got its name from the next owner, who has been a minister to Henry IV.

Music in the air

by Nemorino

This is where I unexpectedly heard two soprano voices singing opera arias, as described on my Paris intro page.

Second, third and fourth photos: Singing under the arches.

Fifth photo: A year later, in June 2007, there is a new café under the arches at the corner where the singers and musicians used to perform.

At least six other VT members have seen and heard people playing classical music under the arches at Place des Vosges.

--tini58de has a photo of a fantastic Mozart concert given by a group of young people -- that was my very personal highlight!

--ptitetoile also has a photo of musicians playing classical music...the acoustic is wonderful!!!!

--jakiline has a photo of a string orchestra, the classique metropolitain orchestra, playing Vivaldi under the arches.

--Beausoleil has also mentioned hearing classical music played under the arcades at the Place des Vosges. (She and her husband were staying at Hotel des Vosges on rue de Birague. From their hotel room window they often heard classical music coming up from under the arcades. "It was wonderful.")

--At the same place, tiabunna came across a group of young musicians playing one of Bach’s Brandenburg concertos to an appreciative audience -- and doing an excellent job of it.

--sachara wrote in a comment: "And yes, I heard classical music under the arches of Places de Vosges as well."

More than a Jeu de Paume annex : hotel de Sully

by mariev

One of the first 'Hotels Particuliers' built out of stone in Paris - in 1624 - when the fashion was still to use brick (like what exists on the adjacent Place des Vosges).

The Hotel de Sully hosts, on the right side of the courtyard (in the former horse stalls and carriage storages), the Centre des monuments historiques (where you can find a library, a large choice of touristic leaflets and brochures and buy different museum passes).

On the left side (formerly the kitchens and common parts) is the second half of the Musee du Jeu de Paume (the 1st half beeing in the Jardin des Tuileries) where photography exhibitions are organized.

The central building in the garden/courtyard used to be the main house - a door on the right leads to Place des Vosges.

Best Paris district to stay

by Kestrel_soaring

Hi

I'll be in paris for 4 nights in October.

I'm thinking of staying in the Marais district of Paris.

Any feedback on my selection and hotel suggestions (around 3 star) would be appreciated

Thanks

We have stayed twice at the Hotel Lyon Mulhouse and like it very much except the breakfast which is okay but unexceptional. It is almost on top of the Bastille Metro stop. You can check it out at:

Have a great time - Paris is magnificent.

It's two star but very pleasant and in a lovely location adjoining the Place des Vosges where there are several nice restaurants and lots of galleries. The Victor Hugo Home is in the Place des Vosges also. It's a couple blocks to the Bastille Metro but an easy walk. It's actually a pretty easy walk right to Notre Dame and the Louvre.

The staff speak English and are very nice. The breakfast is excellent.

You can also do a hotel search by district at http://www.france.com and they have photos and reviews. We always book through that web site and have never had a problem. I particularly like the reviews. (The Hotel de la Place des Vosges is not listed on France.com) I suspect you could get review for it on Tripadvisor.com

Have a good trip.
