You can find timetables and book here: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Cheapest one-way fares are from EUR 39. Tickets are limited and train bound. You can book maximum 92 days in advance.

For this route you will probably get the cheapest ticket from www.bahn.de, not from www.sncf.fr. Even though the trip starts in France you don't have to buy the tickets from the French Railways. The disadvantage of using Deutsche Bahn is that you'll have a more limited choice of trains.

I was able to get a really good deal from Paris to Strasbourg on TGV by watching the site and booking early last year. The fare was over 70 Euro and I got it for 23 Euro first class. I could have had 2nd class for 19 Euro. From there it will probably be easy to pick up one of the 39 Euro fares if booked 89 days in advance. You just have to keep an eye on the sites especially around the 90 day out mark and then act quickly as the specials do sell out.

I have just been reminded that the TGV special came online 120 in advance, so you need to be looking right now. Hope you find a good deal.

Sorry, that should read 120 days in advance.

@marimelda: You can actually get 39,- fares from Paris to anywhere in Germany if booked sufficiently in advance. You don't need to try to get a deal on Paris - Strassbourg separately.
However these deals are only available from DB on trains that go from Paris - Est to points in Germany, not for trips that involve a change in Strassbourg or elsewhere in France.

That's good to know and I might be able to take advantage of that next year. It wouldn't have done me any good last year however, as I was staying in
Strasbourg for a few days. As it was I paid 23 Euro for the TGV and then not much at all when I moved on to Heidelberg a few days later. I see that you live in Bern, maybe you could tell me if there are any deals from Lucerne to Hannover that I could investigate. I still haven't decided on my definite plan of attack for the trip yet as it is till so far away, but Lucerne to Hannover is high on the short list. Any advice would be much appreciated, I'm always interested to hear about a bargain when I'm travelling. Thanks KVB.

The DB "Europa Special" is generally available for any trip between a point in Germany and a point in Switzerland, and vice versa. So you could indeed get Luzern - Hanover for 39,- if you book it far enough in advance.
If the 39,- Special is sold out the 49,- or 59,- might still be available. Book as soon as possible.

Travel Tips for Paris

Sit down and relax

by Blatherwick

One of the things that you must do in Paris is sit at a cafe or restaurant patio and order some wine. It doesn't really matter where you do it. You can sit on La Champs Elysées and watch the pretty people go by. You could be hanging out in the Latin Quartier. Wherever you do it, just sit back and watch Paris evolve around you.

You could also go by an inexpensive wine of decent quality and drink almost anywhere. This I recommend for people who have had too many art galleries and museums in their European travels. Places such as the Louvre can be twice as much fun with a buzz.

The Rose Window

by SLLiew

At the nave of Notre Dame, one cannot but be impressed by the giant rose window of Rose Nord.

This 13th century stained glass brilliantly lighted from outside lights have figures from biblical stories. Standing under this wonderful work of art is a truly unforgettable experience to cherish forever.

Reach SITE island on the left bank of the Seine and visit the world famous NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL. It is one of the symbols of Paris - everyone knows how it looks like from the facade - in the shape of the letter 'H'. The opposite side of the Cathedral reminds of a gigantic spider. Inside there is the burial-vault of French kings.

Equality and Fraternity in action

by rexvaughan

When we travel, I usually awaken early and, while my wife does her morning preparations for the day, go and find coffee. I particulaly love doing this in Paris as I experience seeing the city awaken with people on their way to work stopping for a quick baguette and coffee. One morning, I was standing at the counter in a small bar with an expresso when the garbage collectors came by on their morning rounds. The 3 men collected the trash and then came in for coffee. The owner chatted with them and after a few minutes, they had to get back to work. The owner refused payment from them. Now this is no big deal, but Americans pride themselves on being so democratic and I was impressed with this French example. I don't know that they would have been received as cordially in the local Starbucks at home. Maybe we can learn from the French after all!! (I never doubted it)

Packing List

by tahte

Ladies,
If you use any brand of tampon other than Tampax, or pads with wings, BRING YOUR OWN!

Perhaps I looked in the wrong places or things have changed, but the variety of feminine care products we have in the U.S. was unheard of in the 'Pharmacie's of Paris.
