Visit the Orsay Museum!
A former railway station, this is a great museum with a collection that ranges from 1848 to our days. Along with the Louvre, it's a definitive must see!
In the heart of Paris you find the Orsay museum.
This old train station was transformed into an art museum covering the period from 1850 to 1914.The most famous paintings are by French impressionnists and postimpressionnists.
Vincent Van Gogh seemed to have worked in series, too. The portrait called 'Doctor Paul Gachet' (exhibited in the Orsay Museum and on the photo to the left of this tip) is one of the three done. It was painted in the same year Van Gogh died (in poverty, by the way) -in 1890.
Van Gogh has not escaped the fascination with churches, by the way. See Eglise d'Auvers, which is a top item for the Post -Impressionist collection.
Batobus is an original 8-stop motorboat busline which you can use to reach Paris' most famous areas.
The boats stop close to Paris' most visited places :
Eiffel Tower, Orsay Museum, Notre Dame, Beaubourg, The Louvre… and many more places and monuments the the Batobus crew will advise you to visit.

Has this musem reopened.
Apparently not before 2006, still under works right now, bu if you want to see impressionnists you have other options : Orsay museum, Marmottan museum...
My goodness it has been closed for a long time now - every time I visit Paris its due to re-open the following year but they keep postponing the date - I've been to D'Orsey etc. a number of times.
they found some parts of the city walls from the 16th century so they have to integrate them in the museum for maybe the visitors to see them, so they had to change their plans...
Will all museums be closed on this day? We were planning on going to the Orsay Museum. Thanks.
May 1st is a serious serious public holiday in France.
Yes, Musee d'Orsay is closed.

Best to check the websites of the different museums.
1st of May, virtually everything is closed in France. Maybe in Paris it is different, but if you arrive before May 1st, best to ask your hotel, and maybe also make reservations for dinner (I can't imagine restaurants closed).
Hi all,
We will be staying near to Madeleine metro station after Xmas and would like to visit Versailles for a day.
Which are the easiest and cheapest ways of getting too Versailles ?
Also when you get to the station near Versailles how far is the walk to the palace and is it well marked ?
Thanks.

The walk from the station to the Palace is about two kilometers, and is not too difficult if you can follow a map (I know some people can't) or follow the crowds. Check the days of the week when the trains run and when the Palace is open. Nothing worse than getting to a train station or a monument gates, and finding them not open!
Take the Train RER C5, from Orsay Museum or Eiffel Tower.
The RER is direct to the Castle.
Other options, by bus;
bus Phébus B, BAK, DHL, F, E, K, P, Z ; SAVAC 39.22, 39.12, 39.438, 39.439, 262.01, 262.03 ; STAVO 44.01 ; SqyBus 401, 439, 440 ; Connex ; Hourtoule 27.10, 27.11 ; N121
