Latin Quarter question from a few days ago

by guardiat

Thank you for some of the answers sent in to my posted question. I am practicing my French before I dare make a phone call directly to the Hotel. In some of the reviews of the Hotel from a year ago, there were comments on the keeping things in the safe at the Hotel Parc Saint Severin, and so I hoped posting a question to this website as I did, almost 4 months before I go, would elicit answers from other tourists who knew the hotel, so I could figure out what I needed to ask. I agree it is unwise to take a laptop because of how heavy it is to carry, but all the hotels have wifi service and some tourist help sites suggest you bring one.

(by the way, I am NOT the donkey in the photo and did not choose it)
still learning how to copy and paste from Facebook to Virtual Tourist, so perhaps a Dinosaur would have been more accurate.

Glad (but not surprised) you had some helpful replies to your question.

It's a good idea to post thank yous etc on your original thread. That way, everyone who replied will get a notice saying you've replied.

They may easily miss a separate post on the busy VT travel forums, especially if they do not log in very often.

Hope you have an excellent trip to Paris! :-)

Ooh, silly me. I guess the default photo is a donkey to prompt newcomers to get off their duff and post a photo. I am still undecided about the laptop. My mom is coming with me and might enjoy playing around with it in the evenings. Learning how to "surf" in more relaxed times.

Until you post a photo of your own everyone has Barney(?)the New Zealand sheep on their page.
It is great to practise your French when you are there but if you are not fluent errors may occur on the phone. You can ask if they speak English 'Parlez vous Anglais?' But do tell them you only speak a little 'un peu'French.

When I hear the first greeting on the phone I say "Bonjour ' and then ask immediately if they speak English

Every hotel I have stayed in had an English speaking person at reception.

Yes, it's Barney the sheep.

I agree with the previous posts - most hotels do have someone that speaks Anglais, but asking first will work. If you can't call, email them - in English or if you want to "cheat", run your email through an online translation tool like Babelfish.

The laptop is a personal choice. I very rarely travel without one, but I often use a cheap, lightweight (1 kg) netbook. I use it for personal things, for instance, all of the postings I did on my Paris page last month, were done on it, from Paris. I use it to review the day's photos (the dinky little screen on the camera is next to useless) and to stay in touch with my daughter, who is studying in Toronto - Skype, MSN, Facebook, Gmail and all those modes of communication.

Simply call the hotel and Parlez vous Anglais, s'il vous plais? 99% chance of the person speaking perfect English back to you. I used to bring my laptop, and I wasted so much time in front of the computer instead of enjoying where I was at. It is bad enough with my crackberry. I strongly suggest you don't bring your laptop. Spend no more than 15 minutes a day checking e mails either at the computer most hotels let you use inexpensively or hit an internet cafe. (but no more than 15 minutes) Have a great trip, Karl

Montmartre - intellectual and artistic center

by matcrazy1

Set on a hill 130 meters high, the area of Montmartre looks grandly out over all of Paris.
The end of the 19th century saw Montmartre to be the center of artistic life in Paris and the model of a free, bohemian existence. Many artists, from Berlioz to Picasso, lived, worked, and played here. These creative spirits (and their café, the Lapin Agile) helped keep this area the city's intellectual and artistic center up until the first World War.

Vogue France

by Elisabcn

Vogue was described by book critic Caroline Weber in The New York Times in December 2006 as "the world's most influential fashion magazine" the bible for anyone worshiping at the altar of luxury, celebrity and style.

Vogue’s French edition appeared in 1920 and since then it has had a special relationship with Paris being the capital city the favorite subject for many of its covers.
Preferring “l’extraordinaire” to anything, Vogue has always looked for its covers the bests artists’ collaboration, those who don’t follow a trend but choose to initiate it: Benito, Georges Lepepe, Edward Steichen, Horst P. Horst, Helmut Newton, Robert Doisneau, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol and many more were related to the magazine and left their footprint on it.
At the beginning of October 2009 there was a nice open air exhibition on Champs Elysées commemorating French Vogue’s birthday. Some of its most remarkable covers could be considered contemporary artworks but also show a kind of history of France, the evolution of the society, its tastes and aesthetic trends.

Packing List

by wcbert

Family Travel Paris museums permit cameras but no flash. Also bring along a tripod for some nighttime photographs. To get photographs of the Louvre it is best to get there early before they open around 9:00 AM. Take photographs of the pyramid entrance and when it opens, start taking your photographs inside the museum before the large crowds show up. I find that if you want photographs without tourist in them, it is best to get there very early before it opens and the tourist show up. If you want to take photographs from the top of Notre-Dame, early afternoon is best since the sun will not be in the same direction as the Eiffel Tower. A good train map of Paris. The one that they are giving away free and the subways stations information booths are to small and hard to read.
