Restaurants in 2e
by losham
Hi,
Can anyone recommend a moderate priced restaurant/bistro/brasserie/cafe in the 2e? Preferably with traditional French food.
Thanks much.

Aux Lyonnais is a well known spot in the 2e. I don't know their prices, but maybe a search on the web would have a menu. All bistros and cafes in Paris seem to have fairly traditional food. If you are willing to travel a bit, I know a lot of good places in the 6th where I usually stay.
You can also ask on www.chowhound.com (Paris section). The people there are very helpful and will know a lot more than I do!

One place that's very authentic and not overpriced is L'Epi Dupin. It's a bit small and cosy, but the food is very nice. Near the Odéon Theatre, there's a famous seafood place called La Mediteranée - very popular, but I haven't been there in ages. Also around for years is Rotisserie d'En Face, popular for it's roast chicken. It didn't seem as yummy the last time we were there, but maybe that was just my thought at the time.
Last year I met a friend at Le Ferrandaise on the rue Vaurigard. It was a very good meal and I highly recommend it but book ahead. The quality of the food was very good and it was not expensive for 3 courses. I think it was €32.
Do check things with www.chowhound.com. You'll get lots of ideas there.
Travel Tips for Paris
at some grocery stores....
by forshy1
you msy have to weigh the fruit yourself. unlike here in the u.s., the cashiers do not weigh produce at checkout. a grocery nearby where we stayed, had a scale with the pictures and names of different fruit. you are meant to push the button for the appropriate fruit you are purchasing and the sticker will print out. viola!
Neat trick for taking pics...

When we were planning our first trip to Europe (1998), my hubby divised this simple method of strapping our little point and shoot so we could get photos together without needing a tripod.
He used to be a photog but already did the Eurotrip with a big Nikon, equipment, tripod, etc. He wanted us to be more free and easy and not lugging equipment so this worked really well.
We attached a small, flexible tripod (made out of the material like a snakelight) and wrapped it with velcro.
We then brought with us some double-sided velcro strapping.
To take a picture, we simply stuck the velcros together and then wrapped the strap around a pole, fence, street light, whatever....set the timer and voila!
A picture with both of us in it without having to ask someone. AND, because we set the shot up ourselves we knew it was going to be right!
Ask what will be in your "Salad Nicoise"
by thinking
Salad Nicoise in Nice is excellent, really EXCELLENT! I order it all the time in Nice, but only in Nice.
I have also purchased the tasty Salad Nicoise sandwich in Nice just to determine how the sandwich shop made it.
In Paris, the Salad Nicoise is the worst!
It is whatever the restaurant can cheaply put onto the plates of the tourist!
An unsuspecting friend ordered one in Paris and got cold rice scatttered over the lettuce with some tuna!
Make sure you ask how the restaurant prepares this dish before you order it so you won't be disappointed.
mmm...food....

If only I could bring back the delicious patisseries to Dublin, drooool!!
We just ate and ate and ate when we were in Paris!
What I remember of the food and drink were the pains au chocolats, the pastries, chunky pain de campagne, the Kir Royales and the happy hour Champagne Cocktails!
French produce

Don't pass up the opportunity in bringing back a few bottles of really good wine whilst in France. I would especially recommend the rather fine bottle of 2001 Chateaux Neuf du Pape (as seen the photo).
Therefore, get a good wine carrier, preferably one that will fit in your hand luggage due to the weight of a good half-dozen bottles.
I would also recommend getting hold of the very best tupperware container you can to take home some of those wonderfully smelly French cheeses. After all, you dont want to spend a couple of hours on a plane feeling uncomfortably like you have just had a fart in a lift.
