Suggestions between Paris and Brussels

by hiflya

In late April, my wife and I will be making our 4th trip to Belgium and 15th trip to Paris. In Belgium, we've been to Antwerp (and farther north), Ghent, Brugge and spent a lot of time in Brussels.
On this trip, we are planning on renting a car in Brussels and spending a few days between Brussels and Paris.
I am looking for some suggestions on places to go.
Thanks all.

Lille France might meet your needs and not be too far off the direct path between Paris and Brussels

And what about near Lille and/or Charleroi?, if I may ask.

Kortrijk, just on the Belgian side of the border near Lille, is a lovely small historic town - well worth a stop

Between Paris and Brussel? What are you interested in?
A car makes you flexible; if you like medieval cities, cathedrals. . . . : Soissons, Amiens, Beauvais, Senlis, Compiègne. . . Medieval monasteries: Royaumont, La Ferté sous Jouarre and its Merovingian graves, etc. . . You can visit many of those places in Picardie or Île de France.
Nature? The Estuary of the Somme river (Baie de Somme) with birdlife, and the cliffs of the North Sea. . . http://www.baiedesomme.fr/
Wine tasting? Not necessary to go to Reims to discover Champagne vineyards and cellars: Route du Champagne begins 50 km from Paris. . . . Go to Chateau-Thierry and follow the Marne valley down to Paris; almost every village has Champagne cellars. http://www.group-trotter.net/champagne-route-de-la-vallee-de-la-marne_p-137-fr.htm
Lille is of course a place to visit. Not far are old industrial museums (like the coal mines museum of Lewarde, few km south of Lille, the biggest of France) http://www.chm-lewarde.com/
You have plenty of choice. . . . . and there is lots more. . .

Between Brussels and Paris:
Namur, Tournai (not Charleroi), Kortrijk, Ieper, Lille and Chantilly (just north of Paris) could be visited.

Travel Tips for Paris

When to Visit

by flytheworld

If you haven't been to Paris but are planning a visit, the best time of year to visit is in the spring, summer, and early fall. The weather is at its best and the days are long, so there's plenty of time for sightseeing. August is the only month to avoid in Paris, as the city shuts down for the summer holidays and many businesses and restaurants close.

Paris Tip

by a_goncal

Currently I'm living in London (1999-2000) which is a beautiful city but what I'm missing from Paris is its center (my flat is not very far from the center) with its river borders, Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Tuileries garden, the Palais Royal garden, the Marais, the Place des Vosges...

Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel

by kris-t

The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel was built between 1806 and 1808 by Napoleon I.
This Arc is located in the Place du Carrousel on the site of the former Tuileries Palace (near by Louvre).

The Arc is richly decorated in rose marble on the columns and the front paneling.

It is composed of threes arches, a big one and two smaller ones. The arc is 63 feet high, 75 feet wide, and 24 feet deep. The bronze horses on top of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel were taken from Saint-Marc of Venice. These were later returned after World War II.

Breakfast In Paris

by painterdave

Breakfast for Parisians is not a sit down meal with fried eggs, potatoes and toast.
It is a visit to the local bakery and coffee or juice.
Take a look at the photo below. Much of it tastes better than it looks.
This bakery is located around the corner from Hotel Rouen, a hotel tip I have written about.
But regardless of where in Paris you are staying there will be one of these nearby. You don't have to hunt for the best one, they are all terrific. If they weren't they would be out of business as they are supported by the locals.

Try to learn a few phrases

by Gypsystravels

A few phrases in French will help you navigate the city better. Most people are friendly enough to help, but it is very rude to expect someone to know your language when you are the visitor. English is a widely known and spoken language, but most Parisians appreciate foreigners to be polite and at least try to say a few important phrases. Jot them down on a piece of paper and use them as needed. On the many visits that I have paid Paris I have never come across any rudeness or unfriendly people, on the contrary, they have all been very helpful.
