My “older” aunt and uncle are going to fly into Paris (landing around noon) . They want to stay in Paris overnight before taking the train the Basel the next morning. This train leaves from Gare d’Est in the 10th. They would like to stay in a hotel (probably a 3 star) within walking distance of the station, thus making it easier in the morning. I don’t know if this is a good idea. I’m sure during the day, they will want to walk around. I’ve been fortunate to have been to Paris many times for both business and leisure, and don’t think I’ve ever had any reason to be in this area except possibly to change within the station. Should I try to find them a hotel by the station or, should I suggest that they find a hotel further south near a Metro entrance of a line that goes directly into Gare d’Est. Thanks Liz
I would prefer something a bit more south too
For instance near Chaussee d'Antin LaFayette (10 mn from Gare de l'Est by Metro), they would be near the Opera and could do some shopping nearby or just walk around
I know there is the hotel Libertel just in front of the station, then they can leave their luggage, take the Metro line 4 to the center, they can be in the touristic center in a few minutes, and they won't have to carry their luggage through the metro, no stress for them to catch their train.
On my first trip to Paris I stayed at the La Vieille France Hotel which is right across from the Gare du Nord, one block from the Gare de l'Est, a very short walk. The hotel is very decent and reasonable and unless they are out very late at night, which they probably won't be, it is a safe area. The Metro station is right at the corner from the hotel, so your aunt and uncle could easily take a quick Metro ride to places in Paris that interest them. It is very convenient to getting on to one's next destination, such as Basel.
The hotel contact info is: 151, rue La Fayette (right next to the apex where rue Dunkerque and rue La Fayette intersect), 75010 Paris, Tel: 45 26 42 37;
Fax: 45 26 99 07; email: La.Vieille.France@wanadoo.fr
