Travel Tips for Paris
Dinner at the Brasserie...
by nicolej
Dinner at the Brasserie Balzac. Sitting in cafes sipping coffees, visiting Notre Dame. Watching students at the Sorbonne perform in some thrown-together band after classes on a Friday in the square. Watching a woman on the corner of St. Michele blow bubbles while her child and their dog race around trying to pop them. Ducking into cafes when a huge rainstorm hits (and boy did they hit often!!! That place sure gets rain!!!). Visiting the Louvre via the underground entrance (only waited about 3 minutes in line!!!!), driving in Paris - dear GOD don't do it!!!!
French musicians and painters (2000)
by Mikebond
Many French musicians and singers are buried on the hill of this cemetery. The most famous (and one of the most beautiful) tomb is that of Frédéric Chopin, who had Polish origins but lived in France for a long time.
You will see the tombs of several French singers of the 20th century: Edith Piaf with her last husband Théo Sarapo (second photo), Yves Montand and his wife Simone Signoret (an actress; third picture), Serge Gainsbourg and so on.
Let us not forget the painters who rest here: have a look at Théodore Géricault's monumental tomb where he is sculptured with his masterpiece The raft of the Medusa below; and, by contrast, the simple black tomb of Eugène Delacroix.
Become A Repeat Hotel Guest
by CALSF
Some hotels appreciate it if you are repeat guests. You are more likely to get first choice for rooms and you will probably receive 'thank you' gifts. Others just give 'thank you' gifts to all guests or gifts of the season/holidays. My first stay at Hotel Verneuil I received a box of Valentine's Day chocolates. The last visit I received a box of potpourri, both with notes.
Service compris
by CALSF
Tipping can be a bit tricky in Paris for tourists. That's because there is nothing called "tipping" in Paris. It is called "service". And service is included usually in your hotel rate and in your restaurant prices.
In regards to restaurants, if the service is included the menu will have clearly written on it "Service compris" meaning that service is included and it's usually 15% of the tab. But local custom is that if you are very satisfied with your waiter's service then you may leave a few spare change in addition.
The tricky part is when a patron asks the waiter if the tip is included in the total and the waiter will say "no". That's because it's true, there is no tip so he will say "no". Then upon hearing that the patron will leave a tip of 15%.
Recall that the service of 15% is included already in the total so the service plus additional tip will have come up to 30%!
So don't ask if the "tip" is included-ask instead if "service" is included. If yes, then no need to leave anything unless you are very happy and satisified with your server; in that case leave some loose change or so in addition.
Picnic in the outskirts of Paris
by Dee22
If you get tired of walking around in the center of the city and want some more peace and nature surroundings... Paris can fix that too! Jump on Metro Line 1, 9 or 10 in western direction and head for Bois de Boulogne in the outskirts of the city. Bring a picnic, your bike or a pair of rollerblades and go enjoy a couple of hours in this big forrest, where you'll find a huge Hippodrome (Horse race track) as well as a couple of nice lakes. A great place to exercise or relax!
If you go by metro line 1 (against La Défense), get of at Porte Maillot which is the northeastern corner of the forrest, and if you go by metro line 9 (against Pont de Sévres), get of at Porte de St-Cloud, which is the southeastern corner. Be prepaired to walk a few minutes from the Metro to reach the forrest. It'll be about a 20-30 minute metro-ride from the center city.
