More about Mercure Paris Terminus Nord

Great location

by TripAdvisor Member firsttimevisitingUSA

I agree with the other reviews - the hotel could not be any better located for proximity to the Gare de Nord - very useful if you have heavy bags/arrive late/arrive plastered because you got an upgrade on Eurostar. The rooms are noisy - but it is part of the charm of the location. We found ourselves sitting outside the bistros and bars just outside the hotel watching comings and goings and drinking until the early hours. It did not feel unsafe - there are some dodgy characters - but if you sit with purse/wallet in your pocket and don't leave it out on the table in front of you - basic stuff really you should be fine. There are no back alleys or anything like that in the proximity of the hotel - so you can make your way back late at night with lots of people around all the time and on main streets. One tip is when getting the bus back late at night to the Gare de Nord is to get off a stop early and walk the last part on the busy main street - some of the late night buses go directly into the terminus, which feels a bit isolated walking back from after dark - its down the side of the Gare de Nord and quite a lot of down and outs hang out there. As for value for money - this hotel cannot be faulted really as it is so cheap.

The hotel staff were very helpful. The room was large and clean. We had a bath and a shower and a balcony. I have talked to friends who have stayed here and have put in the rear of the hotel - quieter, but rooms like a run of the mill, travel lodge type place, and very small. Ask for a room at the front of the hotel - yes it's faded, but they are large and airy. We did not find it too hot to sleep in the room - in a very hot spell in August. We also found it very useful to store our bags at the hotel. It meant that we got another full day of sightseeing before getting the evening Eurostar home.

Odd feeling

by TripAdvisor Member Ivanorris

Yes, a very odd feeling when arrived in the hotel. Just in front of Gare du Nord and a couple of meters far from the subway. It's a very noisy street, yes, but it has also some kind of "good taste".
There were many "men at work" and a strong smell of painted walls. The corridors are dark and the room I stayed was not too bad but, well, there were some bugs in the bathroom. I drank a bottle of water from the mini-bar I could bet that bottle was filled with ordinary water from the bathroom because it tasted like it and was not cold. Then I had to pay almost 3 euros for it.
But I can't complain at all, it's a "nice" hotel to stay for a couple of nights.

Dissapointed

by TripAdvisor Member Stewgale

We stayed there in mid July the rooms were very hot and as we had a room facing the main street you could not open the windows at night because of the noise.

The friendly reception staff did move us to a room at the back of the hotel much quieter but still very hot.

As the hotel does not have any air con best avoided during the summer months

The breakfast was very average, the hot buffet consisted of scramble eggs or sausages

With all this in mind the location is fantastic with the metro right out side, you can easily get round Paris.

Scruffy old hotel, avoid

Four stars for this place? They must be paying someone off! I'd give it 2.5 being generous. My room was tiny, dirty carpet that looked like it was last changed about 30 years ago and the hall way smelled like solvent. Also there is major roadway work right in front of the hotel. The staff needs a lil help as well. I asked for directions from a chap with a lil Union Jack pin= meaning he spoke English. The gent had just moved from the Netherlands and said "I don't know much about the metro system lets look at a map" After piecing together where I wanted to go off I went. Turns out he sent me to the wrong stop and I had to back track arriving rather late for a dinner reservation.
Also be sure to check your bill carefully- they had tried to slip a breakfast charge of about 20USD a day on me!! I sent the comment card back to the Accor group with my thoughts about the place. I'd say find a better place closer to what you want to see. The metro stop is literally in front on the hotel and across the street from the train station. Ride it to a better more interesting part of town and find a better hotel. I saw Mercure hotels all over the town- hope they are nicer than this one.
To contrast I stayed at the Heathrow Marriot for 80USD a night and the room was great. As I recall this one ran about 130USD a night.

One Visit Is Enough Thanks!

How can this possibly be a four star hotel? The rooms are shabby and very hot and stuffy. The first room we checked into there was a very musty smell and when we looked into the bathroom there was a problem with the drainage from the sink in the bathroom with dirty water emerging from the plug hole when the water was turned on. The basin was chipped and stained so it made it look even worse! But the staff offered us a change of room and the next room was just as stuffy and tired looking with no bed quilt covers, only the sheets, it looked a bit like a hostel - but the water run freely and clean so we took it. I have to say these rooms looked nothing like the pictures - perhaps they have not been overhauled yet!

It can be said that yes the area is convenient for Eurostar, but the area is seedy and it feels uncomfortable. We were two females travelling for a weekend in Paris and at night we did not like to go far from the hotel. It just did not feel very safe. It would have been better for us to be located in a nicer area of Paris, for example, near the Louvre, and i was very disappointed in the location. We took a right instead of a left when we left the hotel and ended up in an area i wouldnt choose to visit in the dark! There were restaurants close by but you could not sit outside due to the noise and dust from the road works a few feet away.

Breakfasts were very basic, the first morning we had yoghurt but this disappeared on the second day as did the fresh cheese. There was tinned fruit salad if you liked that, sausages and scrambled eggs - didnt look very appetising, or breads and packaged cheese and cold meats. Coffee and tea were ok! The staff were friendly though.

The reception staff were also friendly, helping us to find locations on the tube maps and booked a table at a restaruant for us.

I have to say I would not return to this hotel and felt quite envious of others that i saw closer to the main areas of Paris. If this was a four star, I would not like to see a three.

Allee des Cygnes

by BillGlo

Hello travelers,

Are there steps from the Pont de Bir Hakeim Bridge to walk down to the Allee des Cygnes? I can't tell by looking at the map.
If not, how does one access the island?

Re: Allee des Cygnes

by BillGlo

..........also, about how long does it take to walk the length of the island? (Walking time only, not considering stopping for photos and sightseeing).

Re: Allee des Cygnes

Try Google Earth for a close up.
It's about 860 metres long/.

There are steps on the bottom level on the side opposite the Eiffel Tower. There may be others, but I know those steps exist. You could try http://maps.google.com/ and pull the little orange man down for a street view.

Yes, there are steps at both ends of the island -- at Pont de Bir Hakeim (to the East) and Pont de Grenelle (to the West or the "Statue of Liberty" end of the island).

You can walk to the base of the statue. (Note: There may be people tenting under the bridge.) Walking the island takes only about 15 minutes.
