hotel in Paris
Located in the Rue Jacob, a quiet side street in the heart of St Germain, close to most attractions and dining, the Millesime was an oasis. Large room, well appointed bathroom and friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended

Jardines des Plantes quarter
Hello
will be in Paris for 4 day stay in late Sept 2003.
wanting to know if anyone has staying in hotels near Place d'Italie and can one walk within reasonable distance to Notre Dame, Louvre, Eiffel Tower?

Place d'Italie is not in the same district than the Jardin des Plantes.
Place d'Italie : 13°
Jardin des Plantes : 5°
The prices of the hotels do not vary proportionaly as far as one is far from the center. I mean it is easy to find budget hotels in the center : 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6 districts.
If you are in Paris the third week end of September, I suggest you enjoy the Journees du Patrimoine;It is possible to visit freely some public buildings which are commonly closed for the tourists, especially, the Palais de l'Elysees (Jacques Chirac's home) .

Not familiar w/Jardins des Plantes area but we did stay at a budget hotel our first trip to Paris and that was in the 13th dist. at Place d'Italie. We did not like the area because it was so out of the way from the center. Really you need to take the metro to get to the 5th & 6th districts. The area is good if you like Asian restaurants as I recall it's the Parisian Chinatown and the food was really good. Area is also a working-class district so it's not full of any charm like in the 5th and 6th and the other one digit districts.
In my opinion, there are many other hotels to choose from. Have you checked any in the 5th? For ex., a few good ones to try are Familia Hotel, Minerve Hotel, , Hotel des Balcons, Abbatial St. Germain. All are in the 5th.
If you have a larger budget try the 6th-Hotel des Deux Continents, Hotel Millesime for ex.

The open top busses in Paris are great for getting around all the popular sights and you can hop on and off them at will, get a three day pass it works out cheaper.They also have commentary with headsets so you know exactly where you are and run every 5 or 10 minutes
