Cheap way to call back home?

by DavidEagle

I'll be in Paris and Disneyland for a full week in September and I won't be taking my laptop with me.
Besides Skype, what other cheap alternative do I have to call back home in California?

skype is free. but there is also a service called voip. try that?
as far as actual phones and phone booths, i don't know. hope you are able to find help on that one.

Many Internet lounges have the super cheap International calls available. I believe it is done with Skype or Voit, but no matter, it is by far the cheapest way to call home. In my case I phoned from Strasbourg to Australia and talked for ten minutes or thereabouts for less than one euro! I thought they must have made a mistake, but then when I did it again in Maastricht in the Netherlands, it was just the same. Wonderful system.

Great!
So I guess this won't be an issue.
I'll check out the internet cafes. I heard they have skype already installed and provide headsets and webcams.

Also, I'm looking into the old school calling cards, so I looked up some calling card reviews. It seems that Nobelcom (www.nobelcom.com) gives out some pretty hot deals these days.

Travel Tips for Paris

The back of beyond

by sourbugger

For a country that serves up all that egalitarian stuff about Liberty Fraternity and Equality stemming from the 1789 revolution, it would be difficult to find a more innately snobbish city.

The "I live in a better arrondisment than you" is all very well, but all those who live beyond the peripherique (Paris' ring road) are considered by those 'in the loop' as barbarians who have recently fallen out of the trees. They drag their knuckles along the ground to the outer reaches of the Metro, complete their menial jobs in the city only to return home, hunt wild animals and make fires with two bits of flint.

Such prejudice is not uncommon in big cities, indeed in London anything North of Watford is a londoner's hazy idea of the rest of England - but would they really look down on someone who lived just the wrong side of the North Circular. The idea may seem more normal to a New Yorker - Manhattan is not just the centre of town, it is NY. Using this prejudice to your own advantage. Find a hotel just beyond the peripherique and the prices drop right down, as to neighbourhood restaurants and shop prices. The only downside ? a few more stops in the morning on the Metro.

Eiffel tower by Gustave Eiffel (1832 -1923)

by chancay

The Eiffel tower is an amazing construction, it started on january 28. 1887 and ended begin of april 1889, all for the world exposition in Paris . The tower has got an altitude of 318m. You can go up until the third platform at 290m ......uff, here you can have a view until 100km distance with good weather.

Stand on the huge Place de la Concorde. You pass this square if you walk down The Champs Elysees from Arc de Triomphe to Louvre, so you can't miss it. There's an Egyptian relic in the middle of the square - an obelisk brought to France as a gift for Napoleon, whose Egyptian campaign subsequently failed.

Musée d'Orsay is real must for everyone.
Not only the paintings of the impressionism for which this museum is famous, but also the furniture of art nouveau were really amazing!!!

Real comfortable shoes

by Emke

For some reason there are hardly any escalators in the Metro. So do not take a bag which is to heavy to lift up everytime. Neither bring a bag which is to breadth to walk through the metro tourniquets, ask
Ann why. You can't allways be stylish and you can better walk all day long painless on hiking shoes than suffering on high heels. Plasters for blisters. Who needs photo equipment when you've got
Majol? Braafbrokjes for the dog!
