Local flavour

by ray_d

Apart from the obvious places to visit in Paris,
I would like a more local attraction.

Could anyone point me to local open-air markets?

Do not need extraordinary,
Just the local produce, junk or antiques and brick-a-brack.
Where and which day would help much.

Thank you.

Hi Ray,

Le marché d'Aligre in the 12th arrondissement is well known for its "local" colour, with plenty of spices and fruits(and people) from all over the world. Open every day except Monday from early 'til around 13.00/14.00.

Ledru-Rollin and Faidherbe-Chaligny are the nearest metros.

Although I've never been there also highly recommended is the market at Montorgueil near les Halles and the Centre Pompidou.

We plan to try to inject Paris into our blood.
This, I hope, will be the first visit of many Pedro.

Agree with all, - Le marché d'Aligre, is a renowned market with a melting pot of cultures. Paris has a an exclusive part of my heart, - after all I named my daughter after the City of Light. Initially she did not like the name, but is now sving up for her trip, and calls her trip sheet, "Paris in Paris"....d:o)

Paris for Paris sounds like a must see Erik.

Undoubtedly she will love the city of her namesake.

We had actually decided that the second daughter be named London, but alas, - it was not to be. Imagine my daughter's dilemma if I had been as impressed with the city of Timbuktu.......d:o)

Travel Tips for Paris

by katiejt

Go to the Place du Tertre - it's just by the Sacre Coeur. It's such a lovely place, with all the street artists and little shops. Go there in the evening - the evening I went it was really lively, with a good atmosphere, so I suppose it's like that all the time...... Just the general atmosphere - and despite what everyone says, I thought the people were very friendly and helpful.

by Bagillbaer

read 'The Vampire Lestat' and maybe some more of Anne Rice's vampire novels - makes you appreciate the Parisian atmosphere and especially that of the catacombs all the more. 'Les Innocents'... what a nice name for a cemetery. Made me kind of sad, though.

Musings at Montmartre

by bakpakchik

For the proprietor and the manageress, watching the world go by was not an option. Keeping up with the steady flow of July crowds, both seemed oblivious to the music coming form the piano in the room behind them and to the many things that went on in my mind. I was forced to think that Paris is precious to me, becasue it is mien for a few days. Maybe living here would make me oblivious to its charms as i saw them now, the same way that these two seemed to be. A thought that saddened me ...

Paris fashion models are a reflection of what in my opinion is the Paris essence of style, found nowhere else in the world.

My friend Anthony sometimes gets lucky enough to photograph the glamorous models of Paris.

Tough duty Anthony.

Take the Train to Versailles

by cjg1

My last trip to France in 2008, I finally visited Versailles. Liz has visited several times over her trips to France and loves the opulence and grandeur of the former Kings of France. We hopped on a train and set off to explore Versailles.

We visited during a cloudy day but were fortunate enough to have some sun for a majority of the visit. I had seen pictures of Versailles before and I can honestly say they do not do justice to the real thing. The grounds are magnificent, the artwork is breathtaking, the fountains are huge and the Hall of Mirrors was better than I anticipated.

This is a definite must do for anyone visiting the surrounding areas.
