Pigalle is a must see when in Paris, just to see the night spots, and what is on offer!! We had a drink in Le Chat Noir, rather overated and pricey, but great for people watching. Great atmosphere. Anything I think is acceptable in the whole area, 4 transvestites where at the table opposite us, " Dressed to kill "

We had to go to Pigalle just for the experience, and what an experience it was. Once in the bar I turned to discover 4 transvestites sat at the table across from us. It made for really interesting " people watching " Also outside we could see people walking past the Moulin Rouge ( or should I say trying to walk past ) as they were being nearly dragged in by the men on the door!!! Anything goes and I do mean anything

Good cheap hotel.....
by Duze
I know that this quesiton has probably been asked a bizallion times...but here it is again.
I am living in Paris at the moment and I have friend that will be visiting me in May. I am living in the 20th e and would like to find her something close by. I thought that a hotel near Des Buttes Chaumont Parc might be nice (in the 19th e).
Does anyone have any suggestions!
Merci Beaucoup!

HI! Im traveling to Paris in mid May and have just made reservations at a hotel in the 20E! It is the Hotel Ermitage. Here's the address/phone...42 bis rue de l'Ermitage, +33 1 46 36 23 44, hotelermitage@aol.com
Actually, maybe you can help me out too. I am traveling to Paris for the first time ever and I am going by myself! My husband will be meeting me there after his trip in the UK but his flight is arriving later than mine.......
I am excited about the new experience, but am a little aprehensive to go out on my own while waiting for him. Any suggestions for safe things to check out by myself? I dont want to just sit there in the hotel and wait for him....any advice appreciated!
Thanks
Renee

How hard would it be for you to take a walk around your neighbourhood, visit a couple of hotels (there's one in almost every street in Paris), check out the rooms and prices and then inform your friend? You could even make the reservation...

For "novice traveller": if your hotel is in rue de l'Ermitage then you're very close (walking distance) to a very popular area for going out. Head to rue Menilmontant and walk down the hill. Once you pass the boulevard you'll be on rue Oberkampf which is full of restaurants and cafes. It can get quite busy at night, but it's generally safe: you won't have any problems unless you go looking for them. Check out the interior of Cafe Charbon if you want to see what a 19th century coal depot and wine bar might have looked like - very trendy now, so arrive early if you want to sit down. It's a good place to start your evening, get a feel for the atmosphere of the neighbourhood and do some people watching. On the other hand, if you just want to chill out, head over to Le Chat Noir at the corner of rue Saint Maur and J. P. Timbaud. Several places there to get a good dinner at reasonable prices.

Thank you for the info! My husband and I appreciate it! We were thinking of trying to find a hotel that is closer to the touristy parts of Paris (center of town) and I read in one travel book that 20e was not an ideal place ot stay, but if we end up liking it there at night then maybe we will stay in that area and just take a bus to the sights we want to see during the day......
except that Hotel Ermitage is booked solid for the first weekend we are there....oh well...there are a million places to stay Im sure....
Thanks again!
