Him Paul
First recommendation would be to take the double decker bus tour almost immediately. This will acquaint you with the area as well as help you identify areas you want to return to to explore more thoroughly. You will likley see some restaurants you wish to visit as well.

I do have a recommendation if you are interested; Aside from the culture and architecture, part of the allure of Paris is the historical luxury and decadence of the city. You can enjoy these places even on a budget. If you are not staying at five star hotels, it is worth going to the bar for a drink. Places I would recommend are Le Bar Du Plaza Athenee http://www.plaza-athenee-paris.com/the-bar, and the bar at the Hôtel de Crillon. The people watching and atmosphere are amazing. Does not cost anything to get dressed up, and walk into a place, then just have a drink (even water) and enjoy the atmosphere.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers!

Hi P Paul, I am assuming your are visiting in the summer. If so, you will have at least until 21:30 before it gets dark. That will give you plenty of time to walk (or metro) from your hotel to Isle St. Louis, enjoy Notre Dam (free), walk through the plaza at the Louvre to Jardins Tuilleries, (free). This will put you by the Eiffel Tower as it gets dark and then the Paris lights will go on. Most of Paris is very safe, although the area by Gare du Nord is filled with transients amd travelers and thus attracts petty thieves. Have a great time, Karl

Travel Tips for Paris

Fun Metro ride!

by Marylyon1

When getting on the Metro the other day I suggested to my 4 yr old son to wave at the driver as the Metro arrived in the station. He did so willingly and a great thing happened! The driver stepped out on the quai and invited us to join him in the driver's seat! We had about 10 stops before arriving at our station, so we saw a lot! Stephen even got to toot the horn and ring a bell. It was fascinating, better than Disneyland, any day! So, my suggestion, kids wave at the drivers, you never know what a small act of kindness will bring!

Dress code

by Arial_27

You'll see that most Parisian women are usually very dressed up by American standards (bracelets, necklaces, scarfs, miniskirts and other accessories) whether they're just going to work or our for a stroll.
You may want to dress up more in Paris than in other places, but its certaintly not a requirement. I personally dont see a need for it (I mean, if women should have to get all dressed up, so should men right?) I say tat even though running shoes will (apparently) give it away that you're a tourist, theres no harm in that because you'll blend in with the thousands of other tourists.

Cite de l'Industrie et Sciences

by matcrazy1

.
A 52-hectare haven of greenery and culture situated between the Porte de La Villette and the Porte de Pantin, including not only the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie and the Geode (IMAX® cinema), but also the Grande Halle, the Paris-Villette theatre, the Cité de la Musique and the Zénith...
.
I visited Explora exhibitions and watched a film in La Géode.
La Géode houses France's leading movie theatre, number one by dint of the number of people visiting it, entirely devoted to the projection of large scale films on its giant 1000 square meters (1196 square yards hemispheric screen.

I didn't have any negative...

by miromi

I didn't have any negative experiences with rudeness in Paris. In fact, people I encountered struck me as quite friendly and helpful and eager to welcome me into their lives. Don't go around acting as if you own the place, and try to speak a little French, show some respect and you should be fine. Doesn't that rule apply to travel in all countries???

Packing List

by Leah9

If you're taking the metro to and from the airport, try to pack light! Everybody says bring good walking shoes, and it is no joke. I ended up buying some after two days of pain. They were on sale, fortunately, as was EVERYTHING...(January!)
