Walk at night

by FraMauro

We were thinking of visiting the Eiffel tower at night around 9 and the Arc de triomphe the next night with a walk down the Champs - Elysees, which means we will return to our apt. room on rue St. Honore only around 11 on both days. Is it safe?

Thanks

You will be completely safe and sound if you choose to walk from l'Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile along Avenue des Champs-Elysées, as well as from la tour Eiffel, to your room on rue St-Honoré.

Enjoy the City of Light.

I would agree that returning to room on rue st honore is safe and the area around ET is safe, but I have had friends who have been maced and had cameras stolen after midnight right around ET. However, walking down Champs Elysees and across Place Concorde and then next to the Jardin Tuilleries should be very safe, except maybe the traffic at Place Concorde, which can be quite an experience. Yes - Very safe. No worries.....As I tell anyone in any big city, Don't be oblivious but normal awareness is all you need to be more than safe. I have found that that you need go realatively out of your way to stumble across "rough" areas of Paris even off hours....

Travel Tips for Paris

Discount on trip and admission to Disneyland

by boggild

You can at all main metro and RER stations buy a combined ticket for transport and entrance to Disneyland. The ticket is called "Passeport Disneyland Resort Paris" and the price is EUR 39. You more or less get the transportation for free this way compared to the normal admission fee at the parc.

April in Paris!

by Radiomom

...Chestnuts in blossom...
I've heard it is a gamble to visit Paris in April, in spite of the old song's lyrics. But we truly lucked out this year (2002). Only one day when it seemed to be rainy and chilly, but we survived that easily! This picture is of those chestnuts in blossom, at Luxembourg Gardens.

Let them eat cake...

by sourbugger

The glorious 1789 revolution may have been all about equality, but innate snobbiness and one up-man-ship is very much part of the character of Paris. It matters very much which arrondisment you live in, for instance.

Even that great egalitarian concept of the metro system used to be divided into first and second class in Paris. The first class carriage in the middle of the train was a different colour and less crowded, but that was about it. I guess you just paid the extra not to have to mix with the great unwashed.

Such carriages are a thing of the past, but Parisiens still cling to any oportunity to show the superiority they believe they possess (I would call it in-breed arrogance). Take for example the lift system at the Eiffel tower : despite the fact that queues may snake back further than the the most poopular ride at a Disney theme park, one lift is dedicated purely for patrons of the ultra-posh Jules Verne restaurant ! - says it all really.

Electricity

by sim1

In case you want to bring any electrical appliances with you, here is the system France uses : 230 volts and 50 Hz. It is a round pin plug and receptacle with male grounding pin (see picture)

An adapter will allow you to plug an appliance designed for one type of outlet into another type of outlet. Despite the fact that more than a dozen different types of plugs are in use, a typical travel adapter kit usually contains about five adapters which are capable of dealing with most of the outlets shown here. Adapters often manage this versatility by bypassing the ground/earth wire.

Beware : an adapter by itself will not change the electrical voltage. You must be sure that your appliance can handle different voltages (either automatically or through a voltage switch). If it can't, you will need a voltage converter.
