How early to Versailles?

by SallyAus

Everyone says to go early to Versailles to avoid the queues. Exactly how early? What is a reasonable time to get a train from Paris? We are staying in the 10th arrondissement and will need to get the metro from Republique to Invalides and then change to the RER C4 to go to Versailles.

The earlier the better - Versailles and its grounds are VERY big - you will need all day to fully explore - take a picnic and drinks with you then you can find a spot in the extensive grounds and enjoy your lunch - hire a little boat and row in the lake - gives a different perspective

We were just there New Year's Day and the line just to buy the ticket was long. We had bought tickets ahead of time but had to wait in line still to get in no matter that we arrived there 25 minutes before the opening time of 9:00 a.m. If you are going soon, check the weather so you can dress appropriately. It was cold when we went. B-r-r-r.

I don't have an input on the train. Sorry.

I agree--get up as early as you can,it a huge place and you will need a full day to enjoy this fantastic place--we spent a long time in the palace before entering the extensive gardens which you can spend many hours wandering around.
They have a restaurent near the lake and an icecream parlour--although a picnic lunch is ideal. We travelled from Anvers and left at 7.30am and got the train from Paris 8am so we wouldn't need to rush.We were there 2007 in off peak so if you are going during the tourist/high season then time tables may change.
Enjoy your time at Versailles it is worth visiting.

My experience - prepurchase tickets (we used a museum pass) to miss the ticket line and get just before opening time to beat the rush!

When we visited in late September on a Friday, we pre bought tickets, arrived around 11:00 a.m. and waited about 10 minutes to enter, visited on the day when there were busloads of school children. Stayed until it closed. During that time we saw the main house, some of the grounds and Marie A. get away. Still missed King Louis get away. As suggested by others get there right when it opens and spring the money for the headset which explains many of the rooms exhibits.

Pedro, You don't have a secret entrance for them?

Pre buy your tickets and avoid the ticket queue, it can be long no matter the time of year. The last time we went we prebought a ticket that doesn't exist anymore, I believe you can now buy them online or if you buy a Paris Museum Pass, there is a special entrance for passholders at Versailles. I get a musuem pass every time I go to Paris, it covers almost all of the major museums and sights in Paris except for the Eiffel Tower and with a couple of exceptions (the towers at Notre Dame and St. Chappelle), you also get to skip the ticket lines

Travel Tips for Paris

Paris Tip

by CoraB

I have met my first great love in Paris and of course falling in love in Paris is absolutely fantastic!
But France is also a nice country to live in and the people are not half as bad as many think. Make an effort and learn their language, it is so rich!

Hmmmm....

It was curious to notice how some people look at passers-by during the day and night here. At night try to avoid this place (only if you are looking for the "strawberry") and sometimes it's better not to understand french :-)
But at least Moulin Rouge is a worth seeing place at night so just try to walk fast with a great feeling of self-confident

Little rascals

What were they doing sitting outside the Sacre Cour dressed like that? I photographed them while they watched me doing it. The zoom lens made sure there remained a comfortable distance. I respected their space and they respected mine.

Art Nouveau

by Dabs

Coming from Chicago where the subway, known as the el, is purely functional and sometimes pretty grimy, it's delightful to visit Paris and see the artistic flourishes both in certain metro stations and above ground. In particular I love the old art nouveau Metropolitain signs that were designed by Hector Guimard and erected in the late 1800s, early 1900s.

According to two sources I found, of the original 141 art nouveau entrances there are 86 of them still up around Paris so you are bound to come across one or two in your travels. The 1st photo is from the Cite metro station near Notre Dame, the 2nd photo is from a station somewhere between Notre Dame and the Louvre and the 3rd photo is of the Abbesses metro station near Montmartre. The station entrance at Abbesses is one of only two original glass covered Guimard entrances left in Paris, the other is located at Porte Dauphine.

You can't see the color in the 2nd photo but the light bulbs are red, they look kind of like bug eyes.

Get lost in Montmartre

by maestrousmc

I took Robert Frost's suggestion to "take the road less travelled" literally when I decided to take every side street possible on the way to the Sacre Coeur. No funicular. No tourists en route. Should you choose to do the same, you'll be amazed when you find amazing boulangeries, patisseries, and cafes throughout what has come to be one of may favorite areas: Montmartre.

Don't be afraid of getting lost. If you keep walking uphill, you'll eventually find the basilica. If you get tired, who cares? It's reason enough to take a break for a cafe creme.
