Travel Tips for Saint-Denis
Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne
by Diana75
Pay a special attention to Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne mausoleum.
It is actually the only one in the Basilica on which I could easily remark the change in style.
Most of the effigies are presenting the kings and queens sleeping or praying but having a lifelike image.
Behing the gorgeous decoration, Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne faces are tortured by the cruel death.
Descend into the Crypt
by hquittner
The crypt contains the tombs of the Bourbons and several early monarchs. There is also the ossuary which is a common grave for the jumbled bones recovered from the desecrated tombs after the Revolution. At the time that we took the pictures, we did not have a camera or fast film that would do good dark photography. The support columns around the ambulatory and the centrally placed Bourbon tomb slabs are just visible. A better description is needed here by others. Some of the columns had historiated capitals and there were other primitive rough sculptures as well. (This work is 12C).
Rue de la République
by MM212
A pedestrianised street, Rue de la République is the main shopping thoroughfare in Saint Denis. It runs from Basilique Saint-Denis all the way to l'Eglise Neuve (Eglise Saint-Denis de l'Estrée). Everything from bakeries, butchers and clothes shops could be found on this street, but because of the town's high immigrant and less affluent population, many of these shops tend to be less expensive and sometimes cater specifically to the locals. Halal butchers and Arabic bookshops were among the businesses I saw.
Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne
by Diana75
Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne is another great couple of the French monarchy.
Son of the poet Charles d'Orleans, Louis XII inherited both the throne and his spouse from his cousin Charles VIII.
The mausoleum built for them is one of the most beautiful in the Basilica.
With rich decorations and lifelike statues, the mausoleum is places on the left side of the Basilica.
Questions and Answers
Q: RER from CDG to Saint-Denis? "At the end of a three-week journey (France/Italy) we will be at the Novotel CDG (because of its convenience) for the last night..."
A: "Hi,
There is no simple way of doing this as St Denis basilica is not on the same line as CDG. There are I think 3 ways to do this.
1) Taxi from the hotel there and..."
