Wonderful Provence-Style Hotel
This is a wonderfully French romantic hotel. It is built 2 levels high around a big court, which is mainly parking now, but also contains trees, as far as I saw it every room goes onto this court, some have balconies. My room was perfectly clean with a new shower / bathroom and new furniture - quite minimalistic in design without "Kitsch", very nice (includes TV and Wifi, but the my laptop could not connect to their Wifi). Beneath is the Notre Dame market place, with market on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday morning. You hear slight noise in the morning from the farmers building up their stands, but nothing severe. There are lots of wonderful small restaurants at the edges of this market place, especially try the Cafe Cameleon, just in the corner of the Cheval rouge - just nearby.
To come there, best take the SNCF banlieue train from St. Lazare station or La Defense station to Versailles Rive Droite - it is in any case the nicest connection to Versailles, it runs through some very rich and green banlieue cities, you can have looks into wonderful gardens.
Unique Quality: Romantic hotel with very friendly staff and Provencale style, very near to Notre Dame market place, near to Rive Droite railway station.

A great base
We chose to stay in Versailles for our Paris visit. I know, a little backward. But we had a car and didn't want to drive it into Paris. So we parked it in the cute car park at Le Cheval Rouge where it was secured at night. We were able to walk to the Chateau on the day we visited Versailles. We were able to walk to the Rive Gauche train station the day we took the train into Paris.
The hotel is older, but has some character and was one of the nicer older hotels we stayed in. Our room was sufficient, the bathroom bigger than some, it was clean and quiet. We weren't expecting luxury and didn't get it. What we did get was a great street market just outside the gates, and restaurants to chose from next door and within a quick walking distance.
Unique Quality: I loved the stairs which looked like they could be 300 years old. The staff was friendly and helpful.

old horse stables now cheval rouge
Well on my first visit to Versailles I stay here many many years ago, then came time to live in this wonderful royal town, and past by it often; now I can only recommend it.
Right by the Notre Dame quartier (mine) and the market, with restos and bars all around you, near the antiques section,and walking distance to palace.
Unique Quality: the rooms are made in the old horse stables, you can still see the doors now closed, and the rooms upstairs;very nice. the facilities inside are modern, and nice side breakfast in the front looking into the market notre dame.
