The City in the Dead Waters
Aigues Mortes is a heavily visited place. Crowded even off-season. I can not understand why - in an area which is full of attractive places of very different kind. What you see in A. M. is just a city in the middle of nowhere (salty swamps around it and the ugly Grande Motte nearby) surrounded by fortification walls. But there are so much nicer fully fortified cities in Europe, no, I do not want to compare with the superb Tallinn, but e.g. Avila, Carcassonne, Visby or, in my area the perfectly unknown Glurns/Glorenza - all, except Carcassone, less visited than A. M., and all in a more attractive immediate surroundings. And the next disappointment: inside the city not much to see except the church and the quite average central square.
