Big Ruby's l'Orangerie at Aigues-Mortes: Chic Gay/Lesbian Hotel in South of France
This is primarily a gay and lesbian hotel located in Aigues-Mortes, and one of the nices places I've stayed in. The hotel has a posh salon, a serene swimming pool with jacuzzi (located outside but covered), a manicured lawn, a sizeable sunbathing area with nude sunbathing allowed. There is a good mix of lesbians and gay men. Downstairs there is workout equipment, a steam room, and a dry sauna. The generous breakfast includes bread, croissants, pain au chocolat, cereal, fruit, coffee, and fruit juice. There is a social hour in the evening with complimentary wine. Parking is available downstairs. Rooms are air conditioned, which is important in the south of France. The two owners are British, and the front-desk people speak English. (One is Australian.)
Aigues-Mortes is a touristic little walled city. One afternoon is plenty to see it. Many Parisian gays and lesbians come down just to spend a long weekend. In the area, Montpellier is a must-see. There are, of course, the wonderful little villages of Provence as well.
This is one elegant hotel, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. Aigues-Mortes is about a 25-minute taxi ride from the Montpellier train station. (For around 45 Euros, the hotel will arrange for a taxi to pick you up. Don't bother with a train to Aigues-Mortes; it takes forever.) Montpellier is a 3-hour TGV train ride from Charles de Gaulle station in Paris. The TGV station is at the airport.
The hotel, incidentally, is closed in the winter.
