Canal du Midi trip
I am hiring a barge out of Port Cassafieres at the end of September for just 5 days. What will be the better trip, heading west or heading east toward the Camargue. East seems more scenic, but has several locks to navigate. Any suggestions?
RE: Canal du Midi trip
Either way is going to be a gorgeous trip.
Hopefully, you will get some better answers here, but you could also type the names of several of the towns long the way (both directions) into the VT search window above to see what pictures have been posted on VT Travel Pages.
RE: Canal du Midi trip
Not sure I am in time before you go! Having done the canal du midi twice from Castelnaudary to Port Cassafieres, I would suggest you go west. More interesting villages and canalside restaurants. However, near Beziers, there is a 6 lock staircase, which operates one way at certain times. If you leave Port Cassafieres in the morning you should get to the top of the staircase the same day. It will take you another day to descend the staircase to go back to Port Cassafieres. So this would give you 3 days to enjoy 53 kms west of Beziers with no locks. If you go east, there are only 3 locks, including the round lock at Agde, (all closed 12.30-1.30pm daily), so suggest you make for Marseillan on the edge of the Etang du Thau. It is about 16km to cross the Etang du Thau to Sete. But if the wind is too strong you are not allowed to cross.
Travel Tips for Béziers
Le Pont Vieux is a Romanesque bridge that was built on the Orb river by the Romans . In 1209, when Béziers was invaded and plundered, it was already there and already named the old bridge. Since then, it is still standing though the Orb river has terrible floods. Good job !
