Nice manor house in Lower Town
by Roadquill
I had intended to stay two nights in Carcassonne, but ended up staying three as there is quite a lot to do. The Au Domisiladore B&B, located on the West side of Lower Town was recommended to me by the proprieter of the B&B I stayed at in Aix. It is like staying in an old manor house. Joel, the proprieter, is very helpful. There is a nice common area with a TV available to use, and a small yard in the back. Free wifi. I was up on the top floor, and had to haul my suitcase up 3 flights of stairs. The toilet and shower were in the room, separated from the room by a divider. I would stay again.
Unique Quality: Lovely old manor house

Location of Hertz Downtown Office
by kathymof
Hi - I have a car rental from Hertz's Downtown Office in Carcassonne. The only address information I have been given is "Route de Montreal" which is actually out past the airport and can't possibly be the downtown office. Any help on getting the exact address or intersection very much appreciated. There are two locations in Carcassonne - the other one is the airport.

According to viamichelin (and I trust this site, link in english just below), this is in the airport area

So, I've checked on Hertz web site and my understanding is that both linked to the Airport (sharing the same phone number)

Thanks all - I do believe it is the one near the railway station.
The Hertz site is a study in lack of information. They really need to clean it up.

I just finished a live chat with Hertz over their actual location in Bayeux and they really don't have a clue - they couldn't even give me the name of their agent there. The road name they give is quite long. I suggested that Corporate be told that this is very poor customer service and that they should be far more specific. The reason I was pushing this with them is a few years ago I got to a train station is a relatively small town in Italy and handed the taxi driver my reservation form with one of these non-descript addresses. He just stood there looking puzzled. He was a sweetheart and was determined to take good care of me so he started making calls and finally found the place. He stayed there until he was sure I got the rental. Of course he earned a nice tip which he really deserved. I did find some info at TripAdvisor from others who had the same trouble in Bayeux and now know it is the Total station that is about 100 m west of a named round-about. The person posted this information because of all the trouble he had finding the place.

Carcassonne History (contin)

Then the art of fortificate constructions achieved its peak. The top city became practically unapproachable. The internal ring of fortifications has in perimeter of 1100 meters. An external ring - 1500 meters.
The city garrison made 1300 persons, proceeding from following calculation: one person at each meter of an internal fortification, 20 person at each of 13 towers and 200 person at a gate. The population of the city at that moment was about 4 thousand persons.
La porte narbonaise
by Klod5

by leosantanajr
La Cité Médiévale is the number 1 “thing to do” in Carcassonne. It was my first time in a real castle and I was really exited….
A little bit of its history:
“The walled town of Carcassone is best known as a mediaeval fortified town; the site was first occupied in the 6th century BC by a Gaulish settlement, followed by the development of an urban center in the Roman era. In the 3rd century the town suffered occasional invasions and entrenched itself behind the protection of a fortified city wall…….”
