travel between carcassonne, france or the french reviera, to lourdes france

by mkmchin

My tour takes me to the French Reviera and then to overnight in Carcassonne. Would much prefer to overnight in Lourdes. How do I get from the French Reviera to Lourdes and How do I get from Carcassonne to Lourdes????

Carcasonne is nearer Lourdes than the French Riviera. Presumably your tour will take you from a place like Nice to Carcasonne. To get from Carcasonne to lourdes is about 260 kms by road. You can take public transport. However this can take over 3 hours one way. Maybe by train but change at Toulouse.
Perhaps there is some kind of bus / coach transport. But please consider this and advise further your thoughts. How much time do you have ?

Look at Google Maps for some ideas of distances? Open Google Maps and you can find the 3 destinations ?

If you plan to travel by train, consult www.voyages-sncf.com for train times and fares. You don't say where you will be in the Riveira, but it is 6 hours journey by train to from Nice to Carcassonne as an example and another three or more hours from Carcassonne to Lourdes, ie 9 hours in all. There are few direct trains, so as said above a change of train in Toulouse is needed and sometimes the waits can be long. Many of the trains on the route require reservation and for the cheapest fares make your reservation as soon as you can, counting 90 days before the date of travel for the opening of ticket sales.

There are virtually no long-distance bus/coach services in France, so it is highly unlikely that the option exists. I certainly no of no bus service between Toulouse and Lourdes for example.

By road, consult googlemaps as suggested. You will see that the distance is about 290 miles/460km. That indicates a driving time of maybe 4 hours.

The other possibility is low-fare airline. Lourdes is on the other side of the country so that is probably why your tour company is not considering it. If you are in Nice, they have an excellent airport with lots of flights. You could fly to Pau and take a bus (or taxi) to Lourdes. Other than that, I'd save Lourdes for another trip . . . unless you have several days and can make an enjoyable trip of it.

BTW, don't miss Carcassonne. It is a real experience. Of course so is Lourdes, but there is the distance to consider . . .

Whatever your decision, have a great trip.

Travel Tips for Carcassonne

How did Carcassonne get it's name, you ask?

by fossettes

By the mid-8th century "Pepin the Short", first Carolingian king of the Franks and father of Charlemagne, had been very busy taking back almost every part of the South of France from the Saracens, except for Carcassonne, because of it's impenatrable fortress. After a very long siege, the Franks hoped that the battered inhabitants of Carcassonne would soon starve and surrender. But Dame Carcas, the Sarrasin's widow, came up with a clever plan. She had a pig fed and fattened with the last sacks of grain the inhabitants could find. When the pig was fat enough, it was thrown over the ramparts. When the Franks saw this heathy animal explode they assumed there was plenty of meat and grain available still and deduced that the siege would not end soon. So, they abandonned their fight and left. Dame Carcas had the bells rung all day long to announce the victory. According to the legend, Dame "Carcas sonne" les cloches (rings the bells), and this is where the name of the City comes from.

A statue to honor Dame Carcas is found at the entrance to the city The ham steaks! Just kidding!

Romantisme

Sous l'impulsion du courant romantique, de l'engouement pour les sites pittoresques et la beauté des ruines, la cité va émerger de l'indifférence dans laquelle on la tenait. Le Musée de la torture

by Klod5

Ames sensibles, s'abstenir....
