Stay In the Cite (Upper Town)

In our opinion, the only way to do Carcassonne is to stay in the Cite and this is the best place to do this. (We stayed 3 nights). Our room faced the back which is now a terrace. You have the town to yourself after 7PM. The staff will advise you about activities available and will be helpful. The only difficulty (over which they have little control) is how to get there and away as vehicular traffic is not allowed. If you come by car, be sure to reserve for HOTEL parking at the gate (10 euro) and if you need luggage help they can provide this both in and out, but it will take time (1 hour perhaps and do this at the time you reserve). It is worth the trouble. We do not think people with physical disabilities that limit walking and climbing should try Carcassonne. (We were 67 & 73 when we visited and were not stressed, but we had no impediments). It is a 500m walk from the parking to the hotel, slightly uphill on smooth (?) cobble-stone streets.

Unique Quality: This is a well equipped and staffed 3* Best Western affiliated 62 room facility with the amenities that are implied. The hotel has enlarged since we were there. It has a brasserie and offers a buffet breakfast. If you plan to nap, there are some ground floor rooms on the street side that would be noisy if you open the windows (there is air-conditioning). Some of the facades have changed since we visited, but we are sure the charm has remained or improved.

Accomodation in medieval cite

we stayed in this hotel for our first 2 nights in carcassonne. We arrived at 11.30 but could not check in until near 3 o clock, which we thought was quite late and we were exhausted by that time. the hotel is spread over 3 houses so our accomodation was in a totally different building situated about 5 minutes away.As a result we were not in the main house for breakfast so chose to have it in our room. This was a disappointment , as a delivered breakfast is not as good as the buffet one. We keyed ourselves in and out of our accomodation block, which was quite handy but I felt that we werent getting the benefits of booking this nice hotel with its impressive lobby. Saying all that it was lovely to stay in the cite overnight, it was so quiet, when all the other visitors left during the day we felt privileged to be staying . I would stay here again, it shows you another side to life in the cite.

Unique Quality: This hotel is in a good location for getting a real feel of life in the old cite, and you dont have far to walk back at nighttime .

Very nice accomodations

This hotel is located inside the walled city and has somewhat of a Medivel theme going on inside. We chose this hotel because it was the only one inside the walled city that would let you stay three to a room. The location is perfect, right in the middle of everything. There are many excellent restaurants within a three minute walk of the front door. This hotel does not have a pool, but it does offer a nice breakfast buffet in the hotel courtyard in the mornings. The cost was close to 250 euros a night, but this is about average compared to most of the hotels inside the walled city.

Unique Quality: The hotel has a Medivel theme, with nights armor and other period decorations. The location could not be more perfect.

Last minute hotel deal

On short long weekend holidays we prefer to stay at a hostels, fortunately we checked the last minute deals on hotel and Best Western pop up and had an offer of 50Euros for a double, which is located right in the Cité Médiévale, so hurriedly we booked for our weekend holiday. The service was excellent, the room were large enough and very comfortable. Yes, indeed we would suggest this Best Western, but first check and go for the last minute deal offers they have. The exact location of these branch is: 2 rue du Comte Roger, Carcassonne and the zip 11000.

Unique Quality: As any Best Western Hotel, the facilities are basic but clean.

Very romantic, great room!

Best investment of our trip, the setting was very romantic, and being within the citadel walls allowed us to walk about the citadel at night, when most of the tourists had vanished. The room was somewhat more expensive than for hotels not within the citadel, but the location was worth the price.

Unique Quality: Our room opened up onto a patio.

Within the Cité Médiévale

We have stayed in this hotel twice, ten years apart, and were not dissapointed either time! Located within the ramparts of the medieval city of Carcassonne, this hotel is part of the Best Western chain. It is located in two resotored medieval buildings about 2 blocks away from each other. The main location, le Donjon, houses guest rooms, the reception desk, dining room, bar and meeting facilities. The annex, les Ramparts, has a small public area and guest rooms.

The rooms are recently renovated and decorated in provençale fabrics and colors. The bed linens are very nice and smell of verbena! The staff is friendly and multilingual.

There are very few hotels in the walled city itself. Most are located just outside the walls or in the lower city. An adventage of staying within the walls (besides the convenience!) is that in the evening the town is very quiet since most of the overnight tourists have returned to the lower city! The disatvantage of being within the walls is that if you want a view of the citadel all aglow at night, you have to go for a long walk!

We took adventage of an off season special that was being offered, two nights for the price of one. Our room rate, for two adults and a child, was 120 euros.

A Best Western Hotel

Inside the Old Town. Original way to sleep in La Cité... Especially in the morning, it's a strange feeling to wake up in the 'past'...

Unique Quality: Typical Best Western formula. Good and payable...

An affordable stay within the walls

by TripAdvisor Member gshore

We spent one night at the Best Western Le Donjon in order to experience the walled city. In late December the other hotel within the walls was closed so this was our only option. Because this was off-season we were able to drive right up to the hotel - an experience all to itself (the streets are so narrow that one car barely fits between the buildings - traffic lights to tell you if you can proceed.) Finding the road access was also a challenge.

The room was ok but the bathroom nice. It had a warmer for towels. Except for the bellmen, the staff was not particularly helpful. We were glad to have the opportunity to stay within the walls. We had dinner at the restaurant next door and had a very nice meal.

Wonderful hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

We recently stayed at Le Donjon for one night, having stayed there previously about 12 years ago. I had recalled a pleasant stay previously. I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel had been recently renovated. We were fortunate to have a room with a terrace. The room was lovely and tastefully decorated. Everything was clean and in good working order. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there again. The breakfast buffet was good and definitely better than many of the other breakfasts we had on our trip. It is in an excellent location within the city. I have no experience with the annex, Les Ramparts, so give no opinion. The main hotel is quite nice.

Great Place

by TripAdvisor Member lepstein

Comfortable, clean, good air-conditioning and within the walls of old Carcassonne. If you intend to visit Carcassonne (highly recommended), then this is a great place to stay, even if it might exceed your budget. There's nothing like getting up early and heading out the front door before the crowds arrive.
