Carcassonne to Montpellier

by grek10

Hi. My wife and I and our two children are flying to Carcassonne in August and need to go to Montpellier. What is the easiest way to do this? We don't want to hire a car. Is it necessary to pre-book the train?
Thanks.

There are direct trains from Carcassonne to Montpellier, taking about 1 1/2 hours, but these are either TGVs, or express trains (final destination Marseille) that you would have to book. However, you can take RE trains without reservation, changing in Narbonne, e.g. at 16:27.

There are numerous direct trains from Carcassonne to Montpellier. For the TER or TEOZ trains, just purchase tickets before boarding the train. For the TGV trains, purchase tickets in advance.

There are numerous train options available, the schedules are found here:

Carcassonne History (continued)

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

When you bypass these unapproachable walls, the imagination draws bloody slaughters and unsuccessful attempts of aggressors to overcome defense. However anybody never tried to storm these strengthenings.

There was only once when English prince - the son of Edward III passed through these territories. He burnt the bottom not strengthened city, and the top city did not touched.

Le Citee

by magictravelers

Well, what can I say? Every once in a while, we drive to Carcassone for 1-2 nights and we ALWAYS go back to the Medieval Castle. Just to get away from Barcelona, go window shopping, have a meal (or 2).
We have been to the new part of the City and even have done a Winery Route with our car and a Monastery (Northbound), but we always leave with the impression that Carcassone IS the LE Cite and It gives a lot to the people who not necessarily live inside the Castle.

Yeah! It is quite expensive, but it is a must see if you are in the area.

Bas Carcassonne

Most visitors to Carcassonne come to see the Cité and rightly so as it's a great place to visit. However, the newer part of town - Bas Carcassonne - is also well worth seeing. There are many quiet old streets, a market in the centre and nice cafes and shops. Also, souvenirs are cheaper here than in the Cité.

Cassoulet

by Bob_Shan

Cassoulet, a special kind of french food, was originate from Carcassonne.
Cassoulet is a mixture of "haricots avec canard et viande" (mixture of haricots and duck and porc), and very tasty. However, Cassoulet is big dish and very heavy/greasy. So, dont eat cassoulet very often :)

Old town

by mickebear

Old town of Carcassonne is a really pretty 'imitation' of how the medieval town was like, now filled with tourist shops, cafes and ice cream parlours. Best way to see it is on a horse carriage, which can be reserved from the entrance to the old town.
