public transport and site seeing
Hi there,
I was wondering if you had travelled by public transport at all while you were in Carcasonne. I do not want to drive and was hoping to use either rail or bus to explore towns of the surrounding area.
Any ideas or info

Yes, I always travel by public transport when abroad and I did so in Carcassonne.
Carcassonne (the lower part) has a railway station which will let you travel to Toulouse, Narbonne (which I visited) or anywhere else you fancy.
Look at www.sncf.com
or http://www.voyages-sncf.com/billet-train/horaires for timetables and fares. If you just want train times and details, then
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml
is really easy to use.
The tourist info site has lots of info on local transport (under 'practical information'):

It links to Raileurope for train info (no idea why), but Raileurope is ticketing agency rather than a train operator.
Carcassonne is a fascinating place....I'm sure you will enjoy your visit. My Carcassonne and Narbonne pages have more info.

The tourist office should also be able to give details of bus tours to places that are not well served by public transport. Last time I was there I wanted to visit Minerve and took a bus tour.

Travel Tips for Carcassonne
Enceinte extérieure
Construite pour doubler le rempart antique dans les années (1228-1245) qui suivirent la création de la sénéchaussée royale, l'enceinte extérieure court sur 1600 m sur le pourtour de la colline.
Elle est cantonnée de 3 barbacanes, de 2 échauguettes et de 14 tours circulaires pour la plupart ouvertes à la gorge afin que les ennemis ne puissent y trouver refuge.
Cette ligne de fortification est complétée par un fossé sec aménagé le long de ses murs, excepté sur les côtés que le relief escarpé protège naturellement. L'ouvrage bâti en appareil moyen de blocs de grès régulièrement taillés est couronné de créneaux et de merlons que percent d'étroites meurtrières conçues pour le tir à l'arbalète. Des logements de solives élaborés à la base du crénelage situent l'emplacement de hourds en bois que les défenseurs pouvaient promptement établir en cas de guerre.
NARBONNE ---CATHEDRAL
On Saturday, September 23, Hans. Wim and I visited the Beautiful Cathedral in Narbonne, the CATHEDRALE ST. JUST. Laying of the first stone - 1272. The two towers, 194 feet tall and dating from 1480, provide wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.

Seront également à votre disposition des navettes gratuites (en été uniquement) qui vous conduiront à la Cité Médiévale, où vous pourrez assister en juillet et août à des spectacles gratuits (Festival off, animation des rues, ...).

Looks really scary, isnt it? Actually it looks like and besides its a good help a rainy day like that, closer to the city 5 min on walk yuo firstly reach the low town beneath the castle and then a shelving up way guides you to the main entrance
