montpellier to madrid

by mavl

hello,

just wondering, is there an overnight train available from montpellier to madrid?

thanks in advance.

Hey miko - you again ;-) Montpellier is a really nice city in southern France but is not well linked in terms of transport. As far as I know it means getting first to Barcelona and then taking an overnight train called ESTRELLA or COSTA BRAVA that has some type of 6 berth sleeping compartments and seems to cost around €50.
Perhaps Mariel can confirm !

i mean without any train transfers or long layovers.

ooops, your reply beat my posting by a second. yup, that's what i came up with so far too. was just taking a chance that i might have missed something and there actually might be a direct way without having to get off and change trains.

mariel has been great! she's been helping me a lot off-forums.

thanks puerto lover!

No there's no overnight service nor any direct trains at all Montpellier - Madrid.

There are the two direct trains between Montpellier and Barcelona, from where you can take the new AVE high speed train to Madrid, or the extraordinarily slow 'Costs Brava' train which leaves Barcelona (Sants) at 2220 and eventually struggles into Madrid at 0721.

Things will change in a few years when the new high-speed line opens between Perpignan and Barcelona.

thanks cubsur, that seems to be the only way. i guess i'm a few years too early.

unfortunately, as puerto lover pointed out, those slow costa brava overnight trains don't even have cabins for 2 people (only cabins for 6).

Hi

I can't add to the train info above. However I live near Montpellier and travel to Madrid occasionally.

The cheapest way to do this is train to either Marseille or Girona - then Ryanair to Madrid.

Booking today Girona - Madrid in 3 months time is €25 inc charges each way.

Earlier this year, I paid €100 return for two tickets Marseille - Madrid return.

There are other options here : http://www.the-languedoc-page.com/tourism/languedoc-tourism-air-departures.htm

Don't bother checking Iberia Montpellier - Madrid. It is currently quoted at €983 one way !

Travel Tips for Montpellier

Packing List

by GUYON

The weather is generally nice and very sunny in Spring and Summer. Do not forget a cap to protect your head.
In Winter, beginning of Spring and Fall, it can rain. Bring a rain clothe.
The weather is a bit more windy than on the Riviera. Think to the sun cream (can be bought locally). Do not forget your UV lens.

Place de La comedie

by salinhopt

This huge square (18th Century) is the heart if the city. Sometimes known as l'ouf, owing to its egg shapped central roundabout around which traffic once circulated until it was pedestrianised, it is the most lively part of town.
In its centre is the ornately sculpted Fontaine des Trois-Graces, which is the work of Etienne d'Antoine. At one end is the Comedie is the theatre and facing it are two impressive buildings, the Credit du Nord and the Grand Hotel du Midi.

A perfect place to live

by BurgerQueen

I lived in Montpellier for almost one year, and every time I go back I feel that this city is just the perfect place to live.
It is touristic, but not one of the main destinations so it is not to damaged by tourists but it has all the advantages of a touristic area.
It is a medium-sized city: neither too big and cahotic nor too small and boring.
It is an univerity city (one of the best in France), and it is just 10km away from the sea.
It is easy to move in the city because public transport is very efficient.
In the old city centre it is still possible to find small shops, restaurants and cafés, while modern shopping malls and big chains are located outisde the city.
People a friendly.
The quality of life is excellent.

Why did I come back to Italy?!

Here's the famous "Opera-Comedie" of Montpellier on the "Place de l'oeuf" ("egg's place" -> because of its shape on the flour).
Very cultural city where a lot of festivals & comferences take place.

As some of my family are living there, it's a place I visit regularly & I appreciate a lot : Young, near the sea, sunny, great night life,... ;).

Soon I'll add more tips & pics about Montpellier & neighbourhood.
